Of the 50 plus lakes in Frazee and Vergas area, six are infested waters

Curly-leaf pondweed, a rooted, submersed aquatic plant, grows from the shore to depths of 15 feet. It varies in color from green to brown. The leaves resemble a lasagna noodle with serrated edges that are about ½ inch wide and up to 3-inches long. The leaves are alternate on the stem. The flower stalk grows above the water surface, typically in June. It is about one-inch tall. Curly-leaf pondweed was likely introduced when common carp were intentionally introduced into Midwest waters as a game fish in the 1880s. The species was likely spread through the movement of watercraft and water-related equipment. It was first noted in Minnesota around 1910.

Flowering rush, a reed-like wetland plant, has pink flowers. The dark leaves extend from the root and the leaves have traingle-shaped sections. Three pink petals shaped like an unbrella create the flowers that bloom in June through early fall. The perennial plant grows up to 4-feet high along shores in shallow water. In deeper water, it can grow in a submerged form, but there it does not have flowers. Flowering rush was first confirmed in Minnesota in 1968.

Zebra mussels are defined by its striped D-shaped shell and small size (¼-½ inch in length). The mussel attaches to hard surfaces underwater and feeds on algae. A female may produce up to 500,000 eggs a year that become microscopic larvae floating in the water. They were first discovered in the Great Lakes in 1988 and were first confirmed in the Duluth/Superior Harbor in 1989. Adult mussels can survive out of water for about five days in dry conditions, but up to 21 in wet ones, such as inside a dock or lift pipe.
Of the 50 plus lakes in the newspaper coverage area (the Frazee-Vergas School District) only six are identified as infested waters by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
