Zitzow named a NDSCS Hall of Fame inductee


The North Dakota State College of Science Athletic department is announcing five new members into the Letterwinners Hall of Fame, including Vergas resident Jeff Zitzow. Zitzow competed in both football and wrestling. He was the center for the NDSCS football team and wrestled heavyweight for the school. Zitzow was named Captain of the football team in 1993, All-Region Honorable Mention in 1992 and All-Region in 1993. He also qualified for Nationals in 1993 for wrestling. Zitzow’s final match in the NJCAA Wrestling Tournament was the last match ever wrestled for NDSCS. He graduated from NDSCS in 1994 from the electrical technology program. Zitzow currently owns and operates Zitzow Electric, an electrical contracting business owned and operated by the Zitzow family for more than 40 years. He and his wife, Wendy, reside in Vergas and have one son, Derek. Other inductees included, Willie Austin, Leo Greseth, Lloyd Huyck and Duane Thimjon. Inductees will be honored Saturday, Oct. 3 during the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet at 6:30 p.m. on the Wahpeton campus. Zitzow also to be inducted in FHS Hall of Fame Zitzow will also be inducted into the Frazee High School Hall of Fame. He is being recognized for his participation in football, wrestling and baseball. As a varsity player for the Hornets, Zitzow made All Conference in football and recorded 20 or more wins during his junior and senior year of wrestling to achieve a record number of falls (92) during that time. He also won the heavyweight match that earned Frazee High School its first ever team state championship. In 1992 he also received the Slugger Award for the baseball team. Zitzow, along with Jim and Deloris Smith, Matt Nagel and the 1992 wrestling team will be inducted into the Hornet Hall of Fame during a ceremony Friday, Oct. 2 in the White Pine Room of the Frazee Event Center. The ceremony starts after the homecoming football game concludes. The game starts at 7 p.m.

As the Lady Hornet volleyball team approached their fall season, section realignments have moved them from section 8AA to 6A, but their schedule doesn't get any easier.
