Frazee to wrap up season on Saturday in Breckenridge

After a pair of one possession losses in Heart O’ Lakes Conference action, the Frazee Hornets bounced back in commanding fashion on Friday night as the Hornets defeated Hawley by a score of 89-70. The win improves the team to 7-8 overall and 3-7 in conference action as they head into the final week of action.

This week the Hornets will host Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Tuesday night, before hitting the road for a pair of HOL games against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Thursday and Breckenridge on Saturday.

The Section 8AA tournament will begin next week with the Hornets currently in sixth place in the Section 8AA south standings, according to the QRF. The Hornets are currently ranked 67th in the QRF and trail Pelican Rapids, who are in fifth place with a QRF of 58 and just ahead of Wadena-Deer Creek who has a QRF ranking of 69.

Tuesday

Frazee nearly pulled off a big upset over Highway 10 rival Perham on Tuesday night. The Hornets, behind a blistering night from the field in which they shot nearly 46 percent, led 33-28 at halftime over the Yellowjackets. Unfortunately, Perham was able to claw its way back into the game and came away with a 66-64 win over Frazee.

The Hornets outshot the Yellowjackets on their home court by a 45.8 to 44.6 percent, and went 14-16 from the free throw line, but ultimately Perham was able to dominate in the paint by outscoring Frazee 34-18 and held a 15-3 advantage in second chance points to come away with the win.

As a team, the Hornets had 12 assists on 22 made shots and forced 21 Yellowjacket turnovers in the 66-64 loss.

Jack Courneya had a big night from the field as he hit a pair of three pointers to finish with 27 points off of 9-18 shooting. George Flynn also reached double-figures with 15 points, while Justin Courneya hit three 3-pointers to finish with 9 points. Broden Fleisher also finished with 9 points and Reid Eckert rounded out the scoring with 4 points.

Friday

Frazee improved to 7-8 on the season and 3-7 in the conference with a commanding 89-70 win over Hawley on Friday night. The Hornets once again had a solid night from the field as the team shot 56.5 percent from the field and went an impressive 30-42 from inside the 3-point line. The Hornets also held a big advantage over the Nuggets in transition points, points off of turnovers and points in the pain. 

Of Frazee’s 35 made shots, 26 of them came by way off assists as they moved the ball around throughout the night. The Hornets also played solid defense by not only holding the Nuggets to just 37 percent shooting from the floor, but by forcing 24 Hawley turnovers in their 89-70 win.

Frazee held a 46-27 advantage at halftime in the game. 

Five Hornets reached double-figures in the win as Flynn led the way offensively with 20 points off of just 8-12 shooting. Jack Courneya scored 19 points, Justin Courneya hit four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points, Eckert scored 15 points and Fleisher also reached double-figures with 13 points. Nathan Johannsen also chipped in with 6 points of his own.
