Individual tournament to kick off Tuesday in Crookston

Frazee had its team season come to an end in the Section 8A semi-finals on Thursday night as Crookston was able to upend the Hornets by a score of 43-29. The loss came just three days after the Hornets got its section tournament off to a rousing start with a 60-13 win over Fertile-Beltrami.

This week the Hornets will hit the mat again with the opening round of the Section 8A individual tournament at Crookston on Tuesday night. The super section individual wrestling tournament with Section 7A will continue on Saturday in Cass Lake. 

The state team and individual wrestling tournament will be held on Saturday, March 27 at St. Michael-Albertville. 

Monday

Frazee flexed its muscle on Monday night as the Hornets defeated Fertile-Beltrami by a commanding 60-13 margin. Frazee  was able to get some younger wrestlers into the action throughout the contest as they picked up valuable mat time in front of their home crowd.

After Daunte Yost, of Fertile-Beltrami, secured a major decision at 106 lbs., the Hornets won nine of the next 10 matches to take a 48-7 lead heading into the 195 lbs. match. 

Sebastian Sonnenberg put the Hornets in front at 113 lbs. with a pin at the 3:43 mark of the match to put Frazee in front by a score of 6-4. 

Brady Borah followed with a 5-3 decision at 120 lbs. and Christian Carlson and Brady Crabtree won by forfeit to put Frazee in front by a score of 21-4. 

In a back-and-forth match that went into overtime, Kaden Hiemenz secured a 6-4 overtime win over Seth Lavalier to put Frazee up 24-7. 

Tyler Moe followed with a fall at 152 lbs. over Levi Qualley, while Preston Mayfield, Brock Barlund and Erick Rodelo followed with three straight wins by forfeit to put Frazee up 48-7. 

Following a pin at 195 lbs. by Fertile-Beltrami, the Hornets picked up a pair of pins by Byron Kropuenske and Xander Kohler at 220 lbs. and 285 lbs. to end the match by a score of 60-13 in favor of the Hornets.

Thursday

Just one week after the Hornets defeated Crookston by a score of 42-33 on Frazee’s home mat, the Pirates were able to come away with a 42-33 win in the Section 8A semi-finals on Thursday night. 

Cade Nagel got the Hornets off on the right foot with a bit 14-2 major decision over Evin Trudeau at 106 lbs. to give Frazee a 4-0 lead. 

Crookston won the next four matches in a row, before Hiemenz picked up a big first period pin over Cameron Weiland at 138 lbs. to make the score 19-10 in favor of Crookston.

Moe followed with a 14-5 major decision at 145 lbs. and Mayfield cut the Pirates’ lead to 19-17 with a 9-3 decision at 152 lbs.

Hunter Knutson broke Frazee’s winning streak when he secured a pin at the 3:39 mark of his 160 lbs. match to make the score 25-17 in favor of Crookston.

Barlund followed with a win by forfeit, before Max Rue gave Frazee its first lead since the opening match of the night with a quick pin at 182 lbs. over Cade Deleon to make the score 29-25 in favor of the Hornets. 

Unfortunately, Crookston was able to come away with three straight pins to put the match out of reach and end the Hornets season with a 43-29 loss to the Pirates.

In the super section/quarterfinals of the state tournament, Crookston went on to defeat Badger/Greenbush-Middle River by a score of 39-27 and Royalton-Upsala defeated Aitkin by a score of 43-21.

In the quarterfinals of the state tournament, Royalton-Upsala defeated Crookston by a score of 49-26.

Advancing to the finals of the state tournament in Class A is Royalton-Upsala, Jackson County Central, Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie and Kimball Area.
