Brandon Nguyen connects with a pitch during Tuesday’s double header against Perham.

Frazee to host Park Rapids  Area on Tuesday night

By Chad Koenen

Frazee ran into a juggernaut of opponents of late and dropped its fourth straight game last week. The Hornets lost two games to Perham on Tuesday, before dropping a close 8-6 game to Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale on Thursday. The games come on the heels of an 11-1 loss to state ranked New York Mills the week before.

Currently, the Hornets are 4-10 overall and 4-7 in the conference and will host Park Rapids Area on Tuesday, before traveling to Menahga on Thursday and Bagley on Friday.

Frazee dropped a double header against the Perham Yellowjackets on Tuesday night.

In the opening game of the night, Perham struck first with a run on a sacrifice fly to right field to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets quickly tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning when Brandon Nguyen scored on a Broden Fleisher RBI single. It would be the only run the Hornets would be able to muster in the game as the Yellowjackets went on to win by a score of 14-1.

Nguyen, Fleisher and Byron Kropuenske led the way offensively with 2 hits apiece, while Brock Barlund collected the only other hit for the Hornets in the game.

Scott Seim took the loss on the mound after he gave up 8 earned runs over 4 innings, while giving up 10 hits. Mason Gulhke and Kropuenske pitched the final 3 innings of the game in relief and combined to give up 6 earned runs.

In the second game of the night, the Yellowjackets held Frazee to just 1 hit, a Wiley Bachmann single in the top of the second inning as they defeated the Hornets 10-0. The Yellowjackets out hit the Hornets by a 17-1 margin and scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, 7 in the third inning and a final run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Nguyen took the loss on the mound as he gave up 13 hits and 9 earned runs over 3 innings.

For six innings the Frazee Hornets played solid defense, pitched well and kept the Bertha-Hewitt Bears off the base paths. Unfortunately, one bad inning proved to be the difference as the Bears defeated Frazee by a score of 8-6 on Thursday night. The Hornets gave up 8 runs in the top of the fifth inning off of 8 singles, 3 walks and a hit batter. The Bears had just 11 hits as a team in the entire game.

Barlund got the scoring going in the bottom of the third inning when Barlund connected for a 2-run home run over the left field fence to make the score 2-0. Bachmann ended the scoring in the inning when he hit an RBI single to bring Fleisher around to score.

Trailing 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Hornets scored a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a Mark Jaroszewski RBI single. The Hornets added another run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Barlund scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring at 8-6 in favor of Bertha-Hewitt.

Barlund led the way offensively with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. He was just a triple short of hitting for the cycle as he had a single, double and home run in the loss. Jaroszewski finished with a perfect 3-3 night form the plate with an RBI of his own, while Fleisher and Bachmann each had a pair of hits.

Barlund took the loss on the mound as he pitched 4 2/3 innings and have up 10 hits, while striking out 6 batters and giving up 8 earned runs.
