Notes from the Chief

One day is missing this week due to an early deadline for the paper. I could have skipped this week, but figured I better not because my reports have been pretty boring, I’m told. I received a text message a week ago calling my column “lame.” That was for the report two weeks ago and my reply was, “If you thought that one was bad, you ain’t going to like next weeks.”

So, what’s going on at the farm? We sold some Holstein steers this week. We are raising 40 of them to fats, something we have not done before. We had a little snafu and the steers were not as heavy as we would have liked.  I guess we need to keep them on feed a bit longer. We have 32 steers left and need to keep putting the groceries in them.  Properly fattened Holstein steers can make as good as beef as any other breed, it just takes a different ration and/or system.

The last two cows finally had their calves so that leaves us with 70 cow/calf pairs after starting the year expecting 75. Our pastures are still holding out, mostly due to not putting as many pairs in as we have in the past. We are switching to a new pasture rotation system which includes new fencing and watering systems. We will hopefully be able to rotate on several paddocks and keep the pastures lush and not chewed down as that happens far too often. This new plan will take several years to implement but the end results will be an added bonus for the farming practice.

We hauled some hay home this week and still have 150 bales to bring home.  We have some more hay in storage and will be bringing that home after things freeze up. We may have to cut the herd a little more than normal due to the poor hay crop this year, but so will many other farmers.
