Frazee came just one or two plays short of knocking off Breckenridge on Friday night. The Hornets hosted the Cowboys in Frazee’s home opener, which featured its new scoreboard, and ultimately fell to Breckenridge by a score of 6-0 in overtime.

After both teams played to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, the Cowboys went on offense first and was able to punch it into the end zone for the first score of the game. The Hornets were unable to match that score on their possession and ultimately fell by a score of 6-0.

“I’d love to be in those kind of games every week. They are a nail biter, but at least we are competing,” said head coach Russ Hackel.

While the Hornets were able to move the ball on the ground throughout the game, they had several drives stall deep in Breckenridge territory. Hackel said the Hornets were just a few feet one way or another from breaking a gain that could have resulted in a score, but was pleased by the way the team overcame injuries and played with a tough Breckenridge team.

He especially credited the play of the defense as they were able to keep Breckenridge off the scoreboard despite the Cowboys taking over several drives deep in Frazee territory. The defense held and was able to get the Cowboys to turn the ball over on downs.

“Our defense played a great game,” said Hackel. “We had a few young kids that got to play because of injuries. They did a nice job and played well.”

Hackel especially credited the play of Preston Mayfield, Roy Hoehne and Logan Brekke who stepped up and contributed to the close game.

As the team gets ready for this week’s contest against Crookston, Hackel said the Hornets have several tough games coming up. He said Crookston is quite similar to the Hornets on offense and it should be a good game.

“It will be a good game for us to go up there and see what we can do against them and hopefully come out of there with a win,” he said.

Crookston comes into the game with a record of 0-3 overall as they have lost to Osakis by a score of 27-0, Barnesville 58-0 and Hawley by a score of 41-19. They come into the game averaging 6.3 points per game on offense, while giving up 42 points per game on defense.

Frazee on the other hand is averaging 14.3 points per game on offense, while giving up 22 points per game on defense.
