Frazee-Vergas Forum

Erica Mois is now one of the elite college athletes whose name will live on for eternity in a Hall of Fame. Mois, who grew up in Frazee was recently inducted into the University of Jamestown Hall of Fame for her illustrious career as a track and field athlete. The 2000 Frazee graduate earned athletic accolades as a Jimmie that included being a four-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American in the long jump and she set several records along the way. Mois is the daughter of Derek and Cheri Mois and they were even recognized by the University for being super track fans. 

There are four contenders for the two open spots on the Frazee City Council. Candidates include incumbents David Jopp and Donna Ouart and challengers Mark Flemmer and Mike Sharp. The questions posed to the candidates in this weeks paper are Q: What action would you suggest the council consider to bring businesses to town and “If a business owner announce they intended closing a shop at a public meeting due to no support from the city, how would you respond?”

What started out as a routine pheasant hunting trip turned into a nightmare for four area hunters. Kenny Ketter, Ross Mickelson, Don Schermerhorn and Jim Lockrem feel lucky to be alive after having been attacked by a drunken man waving a large caliber rifle. The four area men joined Pat Dunn of Billings, Mont. for an annual pheasant hunting trip on Oct. 11-15 along the Missouri River on the Fort Kipp Indian Reservation near Fort Peck.  Everyone was sleeping when there was a loud knock on the camper door followed by a man shouting that he was going to kill them.  The tribal member insisted they were trespassing and demanded money. Ketter ended up departing with the man who stuck a 300-magnum rifle in his ear during a three-mile ride to the drunk man’s home.  There, another man appeared and talked the kidnapper to putting his gun into his pickup and they drove Kenny back to his campsite. The “partner” even slipped Kenny $140 back.  The ordeal ended just over two hours later as the men left the campsite.  The terrorist revealed his name to the hunters and Kenny was able to identify the man at the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Department. The case has now been turned over to the FBI in Billings. 

Gary Wright recently moved his business, A & W Small Engine Repair from Detroit Lakes to his rural home located one mile east of the Frazee Highway 10 rest area. The Frazee man is an authorized agent of more than 20 brand names of lawn equipment and chain saws.

The VFW Post 7702 in Frazee will celebrate its 50th anniversary Saturday. U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson (DFL-Detroit Lakes) will present the certificate of 50 years at a dinner for members and invited guests.

John Pachel’s Hardware Store was broken into early Friday by burglars and vandals, only 16 days after being robbed before. Burglars threw boulders through the store window and took tools, clocks and hair clippers. The hose on the gas pump in front of the store was also cut. Sixteen days prior paint had been thrown on the building. Leo Sperling’s gas station was also broken into Friday. Becker County Sheriff James Larson said nothing was taken. 

St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes announced today that a full scale Medical Alert Disaster Drill will occur sometime in the next few months. The last Disaster drill was in May of 1970. Since the last drill was held in warm weather the Hospital officials it would be beneficial to hold the drill when the weather could be snowy and windy.  The exact date and time will be kept a secret.
