Nine wrestlers place at opening tournament of the season

Jake Nagel captured first place and Tyler Moe took second as the Frazee Hornets opened their season at the Dan Unruh Invitational in Wahpeton, N.D. on Saturday. 

A total of nine wrestlers placed in the top five in the tournament, which was the opening action of the season for Frazee.

Nagel captured first place at 152 lbs. after pinning his first two opponents of the day. He secured a 4-2 decision over Logan Schleski, of Otter Tail Central, by a score of 4-2 in the semi-finals to advance to the championship match.

In a tight match from the opening whistle, Nagel trailed Aidan Ruddy of the BW Storm 5-4 heading into the third period. Nagel picked up an early escape and then earned a take down with 44 seconds left in the match to take a 7-5 lead. The two wrestlers traded reversals and Ruddy earned an escape with 4 seconds left in the match, but Nagel held on for a 9-8 win.

Moe secured a pin and a decision to reach the championship match where he fell to Marcus Johnson of West Fargo Sheyenne by a  6-2 decision to secure second place. 

The Hornets also picked up three third place finishes when Cade Nagel won by fall over Colman Barth in the third place match at 120 lbs, it was his second victory by fall over Barth in the tournament. 

Preson Mayfield dropped his opening match of the tournament, but pinned his way to a third place finish with three pins in under 2:34 to secure third place.

Byron Kropuenske also dropped his opening match of the tournament at 220 lbs, but secured back-to-back pins to secure third place. 

As a team, the Hornets took fourth place and trailed just Lisbon with 232.5 points, Brookings with 191 points and West Fargo Sheyenne with 155 points in the standings. The Hornets finished with 153 points.

This week the Hornets will travel to West Fargo, N.D. for a triangular on Tuesday, before traveling to Brainerd for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.
