Helmers hits a shot as time expires to lift Frazee over Park Christian

The Frazee Hornets defeated Park Christian in dramatic fashion during the Legacy Christian Tournament on Thursday night. With the game tied at 57-57 with 15.9 seconds left, Park Christian was at the free throw line shooting a double bonus. They hit the second free throw to go up by a score of 58-57, before Alex Helmers brought the ball up the court, drove to the paint and hit the game winning shot as time expired to come away with a 59-58 win.
The Hornets were led offensively by George Flynn who scored 20 points, while Nathan Johannsen scored 13, Alex Helmers 8, Asher Blaine 6, Jonathon Parsons 4, Kale Ovsak 3, Carter Sonnenberg 3 and Mark Jaroszewski rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
The win was the first of the season for the Hornets as they also fell to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy by a score of 72-54 in the opening round of the tournament.
There was plenty of offense in Frazee’s opening round game on Wednesday night as both teams shot over 40 percent from the field and combined to hit 10 3-pointers. Unfortunately, the Comets hit eight of those 3-pointers to come away with the 74-51 win.
Both teams played well down low and were evenly matched in the match as Hillcrest scored 44 points in the paint, while the Hornets scored 32. The big difference in the game came from turnovers as the Hornets had 26 turnovers, compared to 19 for Hillcrest.
Johannsen led the way offensively for the Hornets as he scored 23 points off of just 9-12 shooting, while he also finished with 3 blocks. Johannsen was also named to the all-tournament team.
Flynn chipped in with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals and Parsons scored 5 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Blaine scored 4 points, Jaroszewski scored 3 and Helmers rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
Head coach Ryan Vigen credited the play of Jaroszewski on the defensive end of the court throughout the tournament. He also said Flynn had a solid tournament by scoring in double figures in both games.
This week the Hornets, who are 1-7 on the season, will travel to Park Rapids Area for a non-conference game on Tuesday night, before hosting Bagley in another non-conference game on Friday.
