Nine Hornets place at Jaguar Invite

Daniel Graham took first place and nine Hornets placed in the top six at the annual Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Tournament on Friday night. The tournament capped off a busy week of action in a return to the mat for the Hornets. 

In addition to the tournament, the Hornets dropped a pair of matches in a triangular with Crookston and United North Central on Thursday night. 

This week the Hornets will travel to Badger-Greenbush-Middle River for a triangular on Tuesday night against the Gators and Bemidji in their lone match of the week. 

Thursday

Frazee dropped a pair of matches against Crookston and United North Central on Thursday night.

The Hornets fell to Crookston by a score of 33-31. The Hornets outscored the Pirates by a margin of 25-9 down the stretch, but were unable to overcome an early deficit that saw Crookston jump out to a 24-6 lead. 

  Jake Nagel made the score 24-10 at 152 lbs. when he secured a major decision over Braxton Volker. Jack Graham made the score 27-13 when he won a tough 3-2 decision over Layten Fuentes at 170 lbs. and Daniel Graham followed with a win by forfeit at 182 lbs. to make the score 27-19. 

Following a forfeit at 195 lbs., the Hornets won the final two matches of the dual by fall as Byron Kropuenske and Xander Kohler pinned their opponents at 220 lbs. and 285 lbs. 

In their other match, the Hornets fell to seventh ranked United North Central by a score of 51-13.

Friday

Nine Hornets placed at the annual Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Tournament on Friday night.

Daniel Graham came home with the lone championship for the Hornets as he took first place at 170 lbs.

Graham opened his tournament with a win by fall over Gabe Hanson of Otter Tail Central. He went on to win by a 3-1 decision over Ryan Nelson of Becker, before defeating Wyatt Lewis of BBE by a 6-1 decision in the championship match. 

Nagel took third place at 152 lbs. after he fell to Mason Doucette of Becker by a 7-5 decision in the semi-finals. He went on to win by major decision over teammate Brady Crabtree by a 9-0 score to advance to the third place match. Nagel secured his third place finish with an 8-2 decision over Isaac Ortiz of Eden Valley-Watkins to finish in third place. 

Other Hornets placing included Brady Borah who took fifth place at 132 lbs., Josh Mellema who took fifth place at 138 lbs., Tyler Moe who took fourth place at 145 lbs., Brady Crabtree who took sixth place at 152 lbs., Jack Graham who took fifth place at 160 lbs., Erick Rodelo who took fifth place at 195 lbs. and Xander Kohler who took fifth place at 285 lbs. 

As a team the Hornets placed fifth behind Becker with 236.5 points, BBE with 232 points, Eden Valley-Watkins with 112 points, Otter Tail Central with 93 points, Frazee with 72 points and Quad County with 68.5 points.
