Notes from the Chief

I had a fan approach me at a ball game in town. A nice lady came up to me and asked if I was the chief and she commented on how much she liked my articles. She said she worries about the cows and I told her that they are fat and happy.

A couple weeks ago we sold our steer calves to the sales barn. We hauled 32 of them to Bagley on a Thursday. That was my first trip with my new stock trailer and the diesel with some zooped up horsepower and a heavy duty newly rebuilt transmission. Things went well except for the greasy roads that morning. More than once I was all puckered up hoping I wasn’t going to slide into the rhubarb. My expert truck driving skills prevailed and I was able to keep the rubber side down and shiny or patina side up.

We have changed up our feeding of the cows a bit. They have been getting along most of the winter on straight round hay bales, some good, some great and some not so good. We try to even them out. We are hoping to extend the hay supply by feeding some corn silage missed with a round hay bale.

A thousand-pound alfalfa hay bale mixed with 1500  pounds of corn silage makes some nice feed for the cows and the growing calf in their uterus. The calf will gain about 75 percent of its size in the last 2-3 months of gestation. The high protein hay along with the energy of the corn silage should produce some healthy calves in a couple months. 

Up next is a Scours prevention vaccine which I need to order from the local veterinarian. Let’s see if they read the article this week. We need 80 doses of the Scour Bos 9.

Friday, Feb. 4

7:21 p.m. Male calling in that the kids’ mom wanted to take them and she was impaired. Mother stayed home and they said they would avoid each other for the night.

9:31 p.m. Kimberly Benke, 30, Frazee arrested on a probation violation.

Saturday, Feb. 5

8:53 p.m. Welfare check requested on a friend by a neighbor. Neighbor was OK.

9:29 p.m. Assist with a vehicle off the road on U.S. Highway 10. Ludivina Briseno, 64, and Isaac Garcia, 26, both from Perham and both arrested for DWI by state patrol.

Sunday, Feb. 6

4:30 p.m. Report of a suspicious female who claimed to be a representative from a national company and was taking pictures. Officer gave advise on basic security to employee.

7:39 p.m. Disturbance between male and female.  Female was given a ride home.

Monday, Feb. 7

9:19 a.m. Parking complaint on W. Maple Avenue that was hindering snow removal. Vehicles were moved before tow truck arrived.

1:24 p.m. Welfare check on a female who was supposed to give a ride today. Female was OK and taking a nap on the couch.

3:17 p.m. Drug puppy found some contraband at the high school. Charges pending.

4:50 p.m. Civil complaint as someone sold a puppy and it had not been paid for.

8:33 p.m. Assist with a medical.

Tuesday, Feb. 8

1:58 p.m. Vehicle unlock.

5:34 p.m. Report of a dog bite.

10:01 p.m. Assist with a one vehicle rollover on U.S. Highway 10.

Wednesday, Feb. 9

1:21 p.m. Report of possible fraudulent prescription. Under investigation.

2:25 p.m. Disturbance at retail business. Female left prior to officer arriving.

Thursday, Feb. 10

3:04 p.m. Assist with a medical.

11:06 p.m. Assist with suspicious activity on Indy 500 Road.
