Hornets to compete in individual tournament
By Chad Koenen
For the 10th consecutive year, the Frazee wrestling team found itself standing in the center mat during the section championship match. After they defeated Barnesville in the opening round of the section tournament, and Crookston in the semi-finals, the Hornets took on 10th ranked United North Central for the right to advance to the state wrestling tournament.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were able to get the best of the Hornets by a score of 44-19 to advance to their first state tournament in team history.
The loss ends the Hornets team season with a record of 11-9 as they will turn their attention to the individual tournament. The individual tournament will be held at Crookston High School on Friday and Saturday. The top two finishers in each weight class will advance to the state wrestling tournament next week at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minn.
Frazee dropped just three matches all night as the Hornets cruised to a 57-15 win over Barnesville on Tuesday night.
Cash Osterman got the Hornets going with a fall at the 52 second mark of his match against Wesley Rotz. Cade Nagel followed with a 5-4 decision over Asher O’Brien to put the Hornets up by a score of 9-0.
Sebastian Sonnenberg followed with a win by forfeit at 120 lbs., before the Trojans picked up back-to-back wins at 126 lbs. and 132 lbs. That’s when the Hornets took over and won eight of the final nine matches of the night to come away with the Section 8A quarterfinal win. Securing pins for the Hornets in the win was Tyler Moe at 138 lbs., Jake Nagel at 152 lbs. and Byron Kropuenske at 285 lbs.
Also securing a win for the Hornets was Josh Mellema at 145 lbs. and Tanner Moe at 195 lbs.

In a match that came down to tiebreak criteria, the Frazee Hornets advanced to its 10th straight section championship match with a 35-34 win over Crookston.
After Crookston opened the match with a fall at 106 lbs., Liam Hamm tied the match up at 6-6 with a forfeit at 113 lbs. The two teams essentially traded wins all the way through 152 lbs. when the Hornets went on a three match winning streak to put them in front by a score of 28-21. During that three match winning streak Brady Crabtree won by forfeit, Jake Nagel won by tech fall and Jack Graham won an important 5-0 decision.
Crookston then went on a three match winning streak of its own to eventually tie the match at 28-28 heading into the 220 lbs. match. That’s when Ethan Boll secured a pin in just 26 seconds to put the Pirates up by a score of 34-28 heading into the heavyweight match.
Fortunately for the Hornets, the Pirates did not have a wrestler at heavyweight as Byron Kropuenske had his hand raised without wrestling a match to tie the match up at 34-34. The Hornets won on the sixth criteria, the team the won by the most forfeits, to break the tie and send them into the championship match.
Waiting in the wings was the top seeded and 10th ranked UNC Warriors. The Warriors were able to come away with a 44-19 win over the Hornets after winning four of the final five matches wrestled.
