Jake Nagel placed first and three other Hornets finished in second place at the Section 8A tournament on Saturday. All four wrestlers, which also includes Cade Nagel, Bailey Peichel and Daniel Graham, have advanced to the state wrestling tournament. The state tournament kicks off on Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

All 14 Hornet wrestlers who competed in the section tournament placed in the top six overall, and two Hornets were just a matter of points away from joining their four teammates at the state tournament as they lost close true second matches.

Jake Nagel qualified for the state tournament after winning by a major decision and tech fall in the opening two rounds of his 152 lbs. weight class. In the championship match, Nagel defeated a familiar foe in Hank Tellers of United North Central. This time around Nagel was able to secure a 4-2 decision for his 30th win of the season and the Section 8A championship.

His brother Cade Nagel was the top seed at 113 lbs. and defeated Kadin Harwood of Fosston/Bagley by a pin in the semi-finals. He went on to fall to Dominick Neiesen of Mahnomen/Waubun in the championship match by an 11-4 decision to drop into the true second match. Nagel didn’t leave anything to chance as he secured a pin over Elliot Isane of BGMR just as the first period was expiring to punch his ticket to the state tournament.

Bailey Peichel also won a close true second match to punch his ticket to state at the 132 lbs. weight class. Peichel lost his semi-finals match against Ayden Hauck of Barnesville by a fall at the 5:56 mark to drop him into the consolation bracket. Peichel won by a fall in his next match and second a 7-2 decision in the third place match to force a true second bout against Casey Weilan of Crookston. Peichel was able to hold on to secure a 4-2 decision to improve to 20-10 and qualify for state.

The final Hornet to advance to state was Daniel Graham who took second place at 170 lbs. Graham advanced to the championship with a pin over Mason Plautz of United North Central in the semi-finals, before falling to Ethan Waage of BGMR by pin in the championship match. Since he already defeated Plautz, who won his third place match, Graham qualified for the state tournament as the runner up.

The Hornets nearly had two more wrestlers qualify for state as Cash Osterman dropped his opening round match of the day and worked his way through the consolation bracket to eventually force a true second match against Conrad Koll of United North Central. Unfortunately, Osterman fell by a 6-4 decision to finish in third place.

Tyler Moe also finished in third place after he fell to Carter Coauette of Crookston in the semi-finals by a narrow 3-2 decision. He eventually worked his way through the consolation bracket and forced a true second match against Zach Thompson of Fosston/Bagley. Moe dropped the match by a 12-9 decision to finish in third place at the section meet.

Also placing third was Byron Kropuenske at 220 lbs.

When the state tournament kicks off on Friday the Hornets will have a number of tough opening round match ups.
