Notes from the Chief

Notes from the Chief….

Well, I spoke too soon last week. Friday morning, we went to feed cows and there was a cow laying on her side, dead, four legs up in the air. This beautiful 3-year-old cow, about to have her second calf, decided to lay in a slight impression facing the wrong way up hill and she could not get up. This is a fairly common issue with cows, so it wasn’t a total shock.

It sure did torque me off though. It seems that every year or every other year it happens.

If we see the cow struggling to get up, we will help her. It may take a gentle nudge with the skid steer bucket, using a chain or rope or just my brute strength.

A little help may be all it takes to get them righted so they can get up. I felt the cows’ leg and she was still warm, so we missed her by an hour or so.

At this point in the season we don’t check cows every few hours as there is not a need as they are not supposed to be calving yet.

Welcome to farming… you never know what you’re going to get.
