Gratitude can be a difficult thing to express when it comes to thanking someone for saving a loved one’s life. Vergas resident Barb Carney is faced with that problem after being awoken by her husband Bob around 4 a.m. Monday, April 24. He couldn’t breathe. He was experiencing congestive heart failure. “He told me to take him to the hospital, so I got up and dressed but he was still in the bed,” Barb recalled, adding there was no way she could carry him to the car so she dialed 911. Vergas Rescue responded, and under five minutes a crew was on scene. Barb emphasized her gratitude to those who serve on local rescue squads, “thank you for being there.”

Mike Riewer is convinced his late cousin April Stenger had something to do with saving his life. The weather on Monday, April 24 included a spring snow shower that resulted in icy roads in parts of the region. About 20 miles from where his cousin passed away in 2015 from injuries sustained in a boat accident, the 2003 Chevy Trailblazer Riewer was riding in slid down a ditch and into Devils Lake. Riewer acknowledge it was quick thinking to go for high ground in stead of the shore, and his friend was lucky help was so close, but in his gut he felt there were guardian angels at work.

Site preparation begun with the start of May at the location of the soon-to-be-built Dollar General store in Frazee.

While Jessica Tibiatowski enrolled for classes in Frazee on Monday, her mind is on her floodridden home in East Grand Forks. Fifteen-year-old Jessica is the daughter of Galen and Liz Tibiatowski. The family was evacuated from their home for what they thought would be just two or three days. The flood situation grew out of control rapidly, though, and the family joined the 90 percent of people in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks who were left wondering when they would get back into their homes.

Penny Retzer, Fargo, N.D. director of the Women’s Business Institute, will be the motivational speaker for the upcoming May 14 community pride meeting in Frazee. Retzer’s organization, which is funded in part by the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Women’s Business Ownership, works throughout North Dakota and South Dakota. The Institute’s emphasis, says Retzer, is on women in business, but she adds that much of the work is with businesses in general.

The Salvation Army has opened an additional flood distribution center at the Kent Freeman ice arena at the Detroit Lakes Fairgrounds. The center is planning to remain open three to four weeks to help supply needed supplies to flood victims.
