Frazee to open playoffs against Pelican Rapids

The Frazee Hornets will open the sub section tournament on the road this week.

The Hornets received the fifth seed and will travel to Pelican Rapids in the opening round of the sub section 8AA south playoffs. The Hornets finished the regular season with a record of 9-9 after defeating Lake Park-Audubon by a score of 13-3 on Friday night. 

Pelican Rapids comes into the game with a record of 10-9 overall. The two teams split a doubleheader with the Hornets securing a 3-1 win, before falling 3-0 on April 28. 

The winner of the game will take on either top seeded Perham or eighth seeded Barnesville on Thursday in Perham.

On the other side of the sub section, third seeded Fergus Falls will take on sixth seeded Otter Tail Central, while second seeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton will take on seventh seeded Hawley.

Tuesday

Frazee swept a doubleheader with Breckenridge on Tuesday night on the road. In the first game of the night, the Hornets defeated the Cowboys by a score of 10-8, after both teams combined for 11 runs in a wild first inning. 

The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the first inning on a Kale Ovsak bases loaded single with one out, before Derek Zitzow followed with a fielder’s choice that brought the second run across the plate. Mark Jaroszewski then scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-0 with two outs, before George Flynn came through with an RBI single and Frazee scored 3 more runs on passed balls to make the game 7-0 in the top of the first inning. 

The Cowboys answered with 4 runs on of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but Frazee was able to add runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to come away with a 10-8 win. 

Zitzow picked up in the win on the mound in relief as he went 4 2/3 innings and gave up just 3 hits and 2 earned runs. 

Caden Rank led the charge as he went 3-5 in the win.

In the second game of the day, the Hornets scored 4 runs in the third and sixth innings, as well as 7 more in the fourth inning to come away with a 16-6 win. 

Breckenridge took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning, before Frazee came storming back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a 2-run double with two outs by Derek Zitzow. 

After Breckenridge tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning, the Hornets went on a big one out rally to score 7 runs in the fourth inning thanks to a 2-run double by Frank, a 3-run double by Ovsak, a passed ball and fielder’s choice by Max Rue to give Frazee an 11-4 lead.

Zitzow led the team offensively with 3 hits and 4 RBIs in the win, while Post picked up the win on the mound by going 4 innings and giving up 8 hits and 3 earned runs.

Thursday

Frazee split a doubleheader with Barnesville on Thursday at home. 

After Barnesville cut Frazee’s lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning, Max Rue hit a 2-run inside the park home run to make the game 5-2 in favor of the Hornets. The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run on second base, before Zach Longfors forced a ground out to the catcher to end the game. 

Scott Seim picked up the win on the mound as he was dominant by pitching 5 innings and struck out 14 hitters. He even struck out 4 hitters in the first inning after a dropped third strike and retired 8 straight hitters from the second through start of the fifth innings. 

In the second game of the night, the Trojans were able to take an early lead and never looked back as they defeated Frazee by a score of 12-8. The two teams combined for 28 hits in the game.

Frazee took an early lead when Derek Zitzow hit a 2-run single in the top of the first inning, but gave up 1 run in the first inning, 6 in the second and 4 more in the third inning to come up short in the game. 

The Hornets were led offensively by Seim who finished with 4 hits, including a triple, as well as Mark Jaroszewski who hit a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. 

Wiley Bachmann took the loss on the mound as he gave up 17 hits and 11 earned runs in 6 innings of action.
