The rain fell sideways Tuesday, June 13. Droplets pelted windows as the wind snapped healthy trees and threw them into the streets of Frazee and Vergas. At the height of the storm the lights went out in many areas. Stephanie Hoff, manager of public relation for Otter Tail Power, said the power failed in the Frazee area due to debris and trees being thrown into power lines. Hoff shared while she enjoys watching storms from the comfort of her home, she keeps in mind many of her teammates are out in the storm.
The Vergas City Council paid off the remaining $67,000 on a bond to renovate the outside of the city hall and municipal liquor store located on Main Street. The council approved using a CD that had come due to pay the remainder of the bond during its monthly council meeting Tuesday, June 13. The $150,000 CD had an interest rate of .35 percent and the bond had an interest rate of 2 percent.
Technology investments at the Frazee-Vergas School District were deemed a success by its technology coordinator, Gretchen Norby, and new considerations were presented to the school board during its monthly meeting on Monday, June 12. Norby said the district purchased three interactive TVs in the spring, with two going to the elementary and the other to the high school. The interactive sets replaced SmartBoards, which she said are becoming outdated.

Dewayne Schaefer requested the debris from 1908 and 1926 school buildings be deposited somewhere besides the school property adjacent to the Otter Tail River. During Monday’s Frazee-Vergas School Board meeting, Schaefer cited concerns about ground and river water contamination due to the debris. He noted that resins, paints, varnishes and asphalt roofing materials could pose an environmental threat due to the proximity to the river.
Sharon Baumgart of rural Vergas returned home last week with some exciting news. After attending the Mrs. United Nations competition which was held in San Diego from June 6-9, she was selected for the third runner-up title. It was an exciting honor for Sharon, the current Mrs. Minnesota, who had hoped to be among the top 15 in a field of 30 women.
Test netting at Town Lake in Frazee showed a healthy population of fish. The Department of Natural Resources had concerns this spring that the lake may have suffered from winterkill. “If there was any evidence of winterkill, it was minimal,” said Area Fisheries Supervisor Paul Glander, Detroit Lakes. The largest populations of fish noted in the netting were black crappie, bluegills and northern pike.

Representative Roger Hanson of Vergas announced this week his intention to run for the State Senate. A two-term House incumbent, Hanson will be campaigning in the newly-created State District No. 10. The district is composed of all of Becker County, 44 Townships in Otter Tail County, and four townships in Wadena County.
The Frazee Mrs. Jaycees are busy planning a family picnic on Sunday, June 25. The picnic will be held at the Fireman’s Park at Eagle Lake starting at 12:30 p.m. Barbecues will be furnished by the Mrs. Jaycees while the rest of the meal is still being planned. Mrs. Jaycee members will be notified by Natalie Miller chairman, about what to bring for potluck. Each family is to bring their own dishes and silverware. Bring the family and join the fun. This is for all Jaycee members and their families. Kool-ade and coffee will be furnished also.
The Frazee Little League boys will soon be out selling candy to raise funds for the summer baseball program. This summer there are about 100 boys involved in Babe Ruth, Little League and Minor League baseball in Frazee. Please help the boys when they come to your door—you will be doing our youth a great service.
Services Today for Frazee Businessman—Edward B. Ketter, 74, of Frazee died suddenly Monday evening, June 19, of an apparent heart attack. A resident of this community for the past 46 years, Mr. Ketter owned and operated a meat market in Frazee until 1960 when he sold the business to his son, Kenneth. He continued to work there until the time of his death.
