The Frazee-Vergas School Board approved a 5-year, $300 per pupil unit referendum at its monthly meeting Monday, July 10. The referendum does not require voter approval, the tax starts in 2018, and will bring about $290,000 annually to the district, of which the state will pay for 57 percent. Frazee School Business Manager Stephanie Winjum said in 2017 the district receives the final funds from the 2012 referendum, which was $700 per pupil unit for 5 years. That amount equated to about $825,000.

For the past several years the Frazee-Vergas School District has contracted with Lakes Country Service Cooperative for the business office personnel. During the monthly meeting Monday, July 10, the board ended its contract. When the contracted business manager Pam Pontius retired at the end of 2016, the district hired Stephanie Winjum for the position. The school still contracted with the Lakes Country Service Cooperative for services rendered by Chrissy Clapsaddle, the district’s business coordinator.

A proposed regional park near Frazee has potential to bring tourism, add recreation and improve commerce, but the first step to the project is securing the 156 acres. Amber Bender of Bender Realty is a member of the initial committee working to inform the public about the opportunity in the city of Frazee’s backyard. She explained a retainer must be collected to hold the property. Then, the committee can start the process of applying for Legacy Grant Funding. She said if the property is for sale the grant is not an option.

At age 17, country rock singer Crystal Andersen has released her second compact disk recording. Andersen  was 14 when she recorded her first demo CD, which featured two songs. This time, she went the full distance, and recorded a 10-song CD titled “Nobody’s An Angel” on AMI Records. Andersen’s new songs are being played on 102.3 FM locally as well as on stations across the nation. Andersen, the daughter of Wilfred and Eileen Andersen of rural Frazee, plans to set up her music debut with this latest release.

For those with a late night adventuresome spirit, there will be a moonlight canoe trip offered this Saturday in Frazee. Those interested in the full moon event, can meet at Nelson’s Hardware on East Main at 9 p.m. Those needing canoe rentals must call the Frazee Tourist Center by 4 p.m. Friday. While there is no particular sponsor, the trip is a take-off from the Third Crossing Trading Co’s blue moon trip held last summer. The trip down the Otter Tail River should conclude at about midnight with a wiener roast; weather permitting, of course.

The time capsule from the 1926 school building will be opened at the Turkey Days turkey luncheon Sunday, July 27 at 12:30 p.m. at the Frazee Fire Hall.

Darwin Huwe and Larry Luckason of the Frazee FFA Chapter at Frazee High School are attending a National FFA Conference in Washington, D. C., this week. The week-long Washington Conference is being held at the National FFA Center near the Nation’s Capital. Purposes of the FFA Conference program are to improve leadership skills, develop an understanding of the national heritage, and prepare FFA members for more effective leadership roles in their chapter and community.

Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it with chocolate, add a miracle or two—the Candy Man can. Yes, it’s the Candy Man, the theme for the 1972 Turkey Day Jr. King and Queen contest to be held Saturday, Aug. 5, at the High School Auditorium. Last year’s King and Queen will crown the new Jr. King O’Henry, Queen Lollipop, Prince Anise, and Princess Taffy.

Vacation Bible School will be held July 24 through 28 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The hours will be from 9-11 a.m. The classes will cover kindergarten through the sixth grade.
