Two local veteran groups teamed up to help a veteran and his family one last time. The Frazee VFW had a patron stop in and chat about a veteran who lived in Frazee that had passed away. In conversation it became clear that the veteran’s family did not have funds for a proper funeral once his remains were cremated. VFW members heard about this dilemma on June 27, reported Frazee VFW Post 7702 Commander Darby Nundahl. The funeral director handling arrangements also contacted the Greg Riewer AmVets Post 612 to make them aware of the situation. AmVet member Rodger Palmer said the post members agreed no veteran should go unburied and put their full support behind the effort to give the Army Reserve veteran a proper burial on Friday, July 7.

The 43rd annual Frazee Turkey Days kicks off tonight and features a whole slate of new events, mixed with the traditional. There should be plenty of activities for everyone of all ages. Kids variety show, flea market, turkey golf scramble, business prize drawings, pork dinner, water fights, teen dance, street dance, turkey trot, pancake breakfast, magic show, turkey shoot, new craft fair this year, and a FLA car wash will all be available for participation.

Lloyd Dretsch of Frazee will preside over the Turkey Days parade as the grand marshal. Dretsch was selected for this honor by the Frazee Community Club Turkey Days organizers. Letters of nomination were sent to the club, which chooses a grand marshal annually. The letter of nomination was written by granddaughter Ashley Dretsch, who stated “he really deserves this because Frazee is everything to my grandfather.” She also wrote that Dretsch contributed to many fundraisers and spent half his time and money in downtown Frazee. Lloyd was born in 1922 in Height of Land Township.

Details on Minnesota’s new deer season and other 1972 hunting regulations were announced today by Commissioner of Natural Resources Robert Herbst. In addition to the deer season, other changes include a return to a statewide pheasant season and a closed area to protect prairie chicken. As reported earlier, Minnesota will be trying something new in deer hunting seasons this year, taking advantage of the new authority granted the Department of Natural Resources by the 1971 legislature.
