In 2005 Alex Day was named Little Miss Vergas; three years ago she won the title of Princess Altona 2014 and Thursday evening she was crowned Miss Vergas 2017. Day is the first one to ever win all three Vergas titles. Also crowned Aug. 10 was the new Princess Altona Kaylee Baumgart.

The Frazee Lions are up to good. The club is hosting the Kruzin’ 4 Kids motorcycle ride Saturday, Aug. 19 in Frazee. About 200 hogs are slated to roll into town around 12:40 p.m. and plan to visit the town until 1:45 p.m., when riders depart for their next stop. Everyone is invited to visit East Main Avenue the day of the event, check out the sweet rides, and enjoy a sloppy joe lunch complete with chips and dessert for $5. A beer garden will also be available.

Blight offenders may see stiffer penalties if the Frazee council continues moving in the current direction. During the monthly council meeting on Monday, Aug. 14 discussions were had about giving out citations, as well as revoking rental licenses to those who consistently do not follow the city’s ordinances.

The public beach in Vergas may be expanded. During the monthly council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 8, discussion was had for lengthening the sandy beach area from the swimming dock to the boat dock. The discussion arose as a possible solution to a goose problem, as they tend to waddle onto the grassy area and make a mess at the water’s edge.

Kristy Shooltz, 17, Detroit Lakes, was crowned Miss Vergas 1997 out of a field of nine contestants last Thursday night. Nicole Glawe, Vergas, took home first runner-up honors and Jason Trieglaff, Frazee, was second runner-up. Shooltz, the daughter of Susant Shooltz of Detroit Lakes and Ken Shooltz, Indiana, won a $700 scholarship for winning the crown. She also won $100 as the talent winner, singing “I Believe In You,” and $50 for winning the evening gown competition.

Frazee’s Don Ulschmid didn’t hesitate to act when called in an emergency. For his quick response, he may be nominated for a life-saving award by a Minnesota state trooper. Early Monday morning, he pulled an injured woman from her car while flames licked the vehicle and heavy fog posed the possibility of additional cars hitting the wreckage. Ulschmid, 39, was waiting at a stop sign east of Frazee to pull across Highway 10, when the semi truck in front of him pulled out to cross the highway to make and eastbound turn. He saw a car approaching and hoped the semi would get across before the car struck the trailer. “I don’t think she saw him,” said Ulschmid. He watched the crash unfold before his very eyes. The car hit near the trailer’s rear axle, pushing the car’s engine compartment into the front passenger area. Ulschmid hurriedly positioned his car so its lights would shine at oncoming traffic, with hopes it would slow other motorists and help avoid further collisions.n

One of these beautiful dairy farm girls will become Princess Kay of the Milky Way XIX opening night of the 1972 Minnesota State Fair, Thursday, Aug. 24 at 8:30 p.m. The coronation will be held in the Band Shell in Administration Park, State Fairgrounds, with the reigning Princes Kay of the Milky Way XVIII, Mary Ann Glawe of Detroit Lakes, doing the honors. The 11 regional Dairy Princesses were selected from over 1,000 dairy farm girls who competed at local, country and regional levels. Each Princess will represent her respective region throughout the year. The new Princess Kay will represent the dairy farmers of Minnesota and Minnesota’s over 450 million dollar dairy industry during the coming year, speaking up for that nutritious milk and the other dairy foods under the direction of the American Dairy Association of Minnesota.

Today is the last day to pick up tickets for a new 1972 Ford Pinto Car that will be given away Thursday, Aug. 17 at 10:15 p.m. at the Becker County Fair. Tickets can be deposited in boxed located at the east end of the field house in Detroit Lakes and in the fair office.
