Vergas will have a rather quiet city election come November with the mayor’s seat and two council member positions on the ballot.
Incumbent mayor Julie Bruhn will run unopposed and current board member Paul Pinke and Dean Haarstick are the only candidates who filed for two open city council seats.
Logan Dahlgren will not be running for reelection. In 2022, he was also part of committees overseeing water and sewer and the liquor store, and he was on the event center advisory board
Natalie Fischer and Bruce Albright’s terms continue until the end of 2024.
Council members serve for a four-year term. The mayor serves a two-year term.
Bruhn, the first female mayor of Vergas and the daughter of longtime mayor Gordon Dahlgren, is finishing a first term that has seen a massive change to the dynamic of the downtown Vergas business sector.
Making her hometown a vibrant community for residents and a go-to destination for visitors was something she stressed upon being elected and the summer of 2022 certainly proved that has occurred during her time in office.
Frazee mayor, council seats up for grabs
City positions in Frazee will include a race for mayor and five candidates for two city council seats. Both council seats and the mayor position run for four-year terms.
Incumbent mayor Ken Miosek will take on a challenge from current board member Mark Flemmer in a rematch of the 2018 race that Miosek won by 27 votes.
Five candidates will vie for two city council seats, currently occupied by Nicole Strand and Mark Kemper. Both are running for reelection and will be challenged by Jim Rader, Andrea Froeber and Tyler “Mouse” King.
Flemmer and vice mayor Mike Sharp’s seats are on term until 2024. Flemmer earned his seat in the 2020 election by a slim four-vote margin over David L. Jopp. Sharp was the leading vote getter.
No new faces on school board
Fours are wild for the Frazee-Vergas Public School District, which has four positions open for four-year terms and four candidates have filed for those seats, all current members of the board: vice chairperson Kimberly Antonsen; treasurer Nathan Matejka, clerk Daneele Shipman and Tammie Nunn.
A former member, Nunn was named and returned to the board in 2021 to fill the seat vacated by Matt Bauer, who accepted employment out of state.
Board chair Thaddeus Helmers, Michael Frank and Tyler Trieglaff have terms that expire in 2025.
