Finishing touches at the Vergas Long Lake trail Scenic outlook were done last week, just in time for the grand unveiling set for Sunday, Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. The trail extension location is along Otter Tail County Highway 60. The grand unveiling of the planter, which includes decorative bricks from donors and an awe-inspiring art piece from Patrick Shannon, was originally scheduled for early August, but rain delayed the event.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway may force the Heartland Trail to follow U.S. Highway 10 to Frazee. Kent Skaar, the senior project manager of the division of parks and trails for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said the railroad recently sent a letter to trail developers and further clarification is being sought.

Diane Bauck to serve as new preschool instructor—Diane, who lives in rural Perham with her husband, Dean and their son Davin, 7, will take over the teaching position left vacant by Linda Franzmeier. Although Diane will be new to the preschool here, she is certainly not new to working with church preschool groups. Eight years ago, Diane started the preschool at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham. She has also taught in California, Arizona and Colorado.
Two Frazee trees took top honors in the ongoing Becker County big tree contest. Frazee boasts an 81-foot white pine and a 60-foot basswood to make the final cut in the contest. Exact locations of the trees were not made available as they are on private property.

For the second straight year there has been a decrease in the opening day enrollment at the Frazee-Vergas Schools as classes got underway Monday, Aug. 28. The 1,399 students reporting for classes is 25 fewer than the 1,424 enrolled a year ago, and 44 fewer than the record high 1,443 students enrolled on opening day in 1970.
A course in motorcycle safety is being offered to students enrolled in school this fall due to a law passed by the Minnesota Legislature.
