Resident avoids $7,000 ‘grandparent scam’

Friday, Sept. 16
7:39 p.m. Assist with a medical.
12:12 p.m. Welfare check on a juvenile from the high school.
12:31 p.m. Report of harassment between some drama queens. More restraining orders issued.
6:19 p.m. Report of people in a vehicle passing a bottle around. Officer found the vehicle and driver, no signs of alcohol.
11:36 p.m. Report of loud music on Balsam Ave. Officer talked with loud partiers about keeping the music down.
11:42 p.m. Report of someone trying to hack into social media accounts for years.
Saturday, Sept. 17
7:05 p.m. Report of a domestic assault between family members arguing over toys bought from Spencer Gifts.
8:04 p.m. Report of a theft of a vehicle that was loaned out and it has not been returned yet.
Sunday, Sept. 18
3:46 p.m. Welfare check requested on a suicidal female. Officer talked with female and she did not want any assistance from medical or police.
5:57 p.m. Vehicle unlock on W. Maple.
12:14 a.m. Male with a warrant in town. Male left his house prior to officer arriving.
12:54 a.m. Report of one apartment shutting power off to another apartment. Power was turned back on.
Monday, Sept. 19
7:53 p.m. 911 call from person having medical issue.
12:04 p.m. Report of a fight at the high school. Incident is under investigation.
1:10 p.m. Husband reporting his wife is missing. Husband found his wife and all was ok.
4:39 p.m. Report of another court order violation by our local soap opera actors. No harassment restraining order violation found, charges pending for Disorderly Conduct.
7:37 p.m. Report of the theft of a campaign sign.
11:41 p.m. Report that a vehicle broke down at the Dollar General and will be removed the next day.
Tuesday, Sept. 20
7:38 a.m. Traffic stop with warning for driving wrong way in construction zone.
6:11 p.m. Report of a disturbance on Rivercrest Drive. Nothing out of the ordinary observed by officer.
8:10 p.m. Local homeless male asking for a ride to a residence where he is trespassed from. Ride not given by officer. There are times and places that we will gladly help someone out, but not in this case where the situation could be made worse by taking someone to a place they are not wanted.

Wednesday, Sept. 21
12:24 p.m. Report of someone living at an abandoned property that is set to be demolished.
4:56 p.m. Warning given to female driver for driving through road closed area.
5:25 p.m. Resident concerned about a male party acting suspicious in his neighborhood. Officer most likely identified the male party as the one asking for a ride the day before. Nothing criminal noted, officer advised resident to keep an eye on him and his neighbor’s properties for suspicious activity.
9:51 p.m. Report of several court order violations. Under investigation.
Thursday, Sept. 22
9:45 a.m. Report of a scuffle between some construction workers at the new football field. No charges and construction foreman said he would handle the issue.
10:33 a.m. Female calling in to report a scam. Elderly female reportedly received a call that her grandson is in jail and needed $7000 to get out. No money or personal information was given out. This is known as the “grandparent scam” and someone in the area was just bilked out of $18,000. Please do not give out any information in situations like this. Contact other family members to confirm or deny the need for bail money. This type of scam has been around for many years know. Also, have a talk with the senior citizens in your life and warn of the possible scams out there.
