Ethel Wacker is about to turn 100. Living without assistance in her Detroit Lakes condo, the former Toad Lake resident is willing to give away her secret to living a long life – one cup of coffee in the morning. Having a happy life is a little more complicated. Ethel explained, for her, happiness has to do with family, spirituality, acceptance and understanding possessions don’t mean a hill of beans. Ethel’s family is hosting a birthday party Saturday, Oct. 28 from 1-4 p.m. at Evergreen Church, Frazee. Being personal connections are what matter most to Ethel, the gift of smiling faces is all she wants for her big day, and possibly a slice of apple pie.

The Frazee City Council approved the low bid of $73,945 from Foltz Buildings of Detroit Lakes for an addition to its new city shop. The new addition will be 50- by 100-feet, with 50- by 60-feet of that insulated with a concrete floor. This addition will be added onto the former Becker County shop, located on the edge of Frazee on County Road 29. It is estimated the addition will total $100,000 when electrical, landscaping and plumbing costs are added. The city plans to seek quotes from area contractors for the remaining portions of the project.

The study of the Main Avenue Dam in Frazee has begun, and water levels are falling on the Otter Tail River. Last Thursday and Friday, engineers from Short Elliott Hendrickson, Inc. of St. Paul are in the Frazee area to survey the dam and the river. In September 1994, the City of Frazee, dam owners, received notification from the Department of Natural Resources that the Main Avenue Dam would either have to be repaired or removed.
