Notes from the Chief

Apparently, people have missed my weekly stories. A week or so ago an old bitty or was it an old Betty, asked me about my report in the paper. I also got a message from another bitty, but she doesn’t qualify for the “old” part yet.

We had a very plentiful haying season with over 1,000 round bales put up compared to 467 last year. The cows have been pulled from the pasture and we are starting a new pasture rotation system with the help of the local NRCS office in DL. There is about 27,000-feet of new fence on the farm, all in high tensile wire and using an electric fencer to keep the bovines on our property.  Last weekend, we ran the cows through the chute with the vet preg checking them: 68/76 are with calf and the 8 are going down the road to a hamburger near you.  

One open (not pregnant) is a new heifer and we may fatten her up to sell to friends or family. The other open cows are a few older cows that have put their time in. 

A few days ago, we weaned the calves, about 70 or so. The calves are each brought into the chute to be processed. We will weigh each calf, give two vaccines and put a weaning tag in their nose. This tag prevents the calf from nursing on mama as they will not be separated yet. After 4-5 days, the calves will be brought back into the chute and the tag is removed, usually full of all kinds of snot bubbles and slime. The calves will then be separated from their mothers and the calves will not miss mama, saving them a lot of stress versus cold weaning.  

This has proven to greatly reduce the need to treat sick calves as they are more likely to go to the feed bunk then bawl for mama. The cows will be plenty ticked off for a few days and they will put on a nice vocal show as the deer hunters in our area will find out. The calves will be fed a backgrounding ration for a month or two until we sell them after the first of the year. The cows will be kept close to the farm for the hunting season and then we will turn them onto their winter pasture.

Friday, Oct. 21

4:20 p.m. Assist with a kitchen fire on Co Hwy 31. The house was most likely saved by the homeowner who used a fire extinguisher.

6:44 p.m. Assist with a semi vs Amish buggy crash on St Hwy 87.

Saturday, Oct. 22

Happy birthday to my dad!

5:19 p.m. Assist with a medical on St Hwy 87.

7:10 p.m. Assist with traffic control in the construction zone.

Sunday, Oct. 23

3:24 p.m. Stray dog brought to the PD. Dog was brought to Lucky Dog in DL. 

8:05 p.m. Parking complaint called in of a vehicle on the bike trail between Frazee and DL. Van was parked as mom was chasing after kids and or dogs.

6:53 p.m. Report that two juvenile females were out asking for cash donations for their class.  Resident told them she would gladly buy raffle tickets or goods, but not just donate cash.  Unknown who the girls are.

9:33 p.m. Report that a juvenile boy would not go home with his mother and took off from a friend’s house. Mom and dad were both in town looking for the youngster as well as the police.  Juvenile finally made contact and got a ride home.

Monday, Oct. 24

7:20 a.m. Assist with a medical.

10:39 a.m. Female talked with the officer as she was having concerns about her kids’ fathers behavior. Officer discussed some options with her.

Tuesday, Oct. 25

10:54 a.m. Report of minor vandalism at the MAHUBE playground. Extra patrol requested.

2:38 p.m. Assist with locating the owner of a vehicle that was parked on private property and hindering contractors at the property.

7:15 p.m. Assist with a medical on St Hwy 87.

7:53 p.m. Disturbance reported between male and female with male slapping the hand of the female away after she was up in his grill. Under investigation.

Wednesday, Oct. 26

9:09 a.m. Report taken of a juvenile male runaway.

1:11 p.m. Property damage to a house on 4th St SE. Under investigation.

8:34 p.m. Assist with a report for a female claiming someone stole her identity.

9:16 p.m. Report of a traffic complaint in an ongoing issue between neighbors.

9:24 p.m. Report of two Ford pickups tearing around in the high school parking lot. Officer found one Ford pickup and talked with the teenage male driver. Driver admitted to horsing around.  

12:51 a.m. Assist with a call of someone having suicidal thoughts. Officer talked with party and waited until family showed up.

2:51 a.m. Assist with a call of another person with suicidal ideations. Officer was not able to make contact. Officer made contact in the morning. 

Thursday, Oct. 27

9:32 a.m. Officer talked with a female who was concerned about her grandkids and their father. Officer explained the options as he had to her daughter three days prior.

12:34 p.m. Assist with a piece of construction equipment that had a breakdown near 5th St NW and Juniper Ave.

1:21 p.m. Officer talked with a male party who is concerned about the welfare of his kids when they are with their mother. Officer told male he needed to contact Otter Tail County Human Services as he and the ex-wife both live in Perham.  

6:25 p.m. Report of a disturbance at the Third Crossing Bar and Lounge. No charges from the disturbance. Jeneane Knox, 53, Frazee arrested on a Mahnomen County warrant.
