Seven wrestlers place at Paul Bunyan tournament in Bemidji

Seven wrestlers placed and the Hornets took eighth place overall at the 19 team Paul Bunyan Invite last weekend in Bemidji. The tournament capped off a busy week for the Hornets that also included a triangular against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville and West Fargo in Frazee on Thursday.

This week the Hornets will travel to Parkers Prairie for a triangular against Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie and Royalton-Upsala on Tuesday, before traveling for another triangular in Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Thursday. That triangular will feature DGF, Frazee and Pelican Rapids. 

On Saturday the Hornets will host a triangular with Staples-Motley and Moorhead in their final action of the 2022 portion of their schedule. 

A pair of Frazee wrestlers are currently ranked in the top 10 in the state. Senior Jake Nagel is ranked seventh at 160 lbs., while junior Preston Mayfield is ranked 10th at 170 lbs. 

Thursday

Frazee split a dual with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville and West Fargo on Thursday night. 

In their match against LPGEB, the Hornets fell by a score of 40-24. 

Cash Osterman picked up the Hornets first win of the match when he secured a 4-2 decision over Logan Thom in overtime. The Hornets lost the next four matches to trail by a score of 22-3, before Bailey Peichel secured a 10-2 major decision, Tyler Moe picked up a tech fall and Jake Nagel secured a pin at 160 lbs. to make the score 22-18 in favor of LPGEB. 

Preston Mayfield followed with a 4-3 decision to bring the Hornets within one point at 22-21, but LPGEB battled back by securing a pin at both 182 lbs. and 220 lbs., along with a forfeit at heavyweight to come away with the win. 

Daniel Graham also secured a win for Frazee when he won a 6-4 decision in overtime at 195 lbs. 

In their match against West Fargo, the Hornets won five of the opening six matches and never looked back as they won 39-35.

Gabe Schermerhorn started the match off with a win by forfeit at 106 lbs., before Osterman won by fall to make the score 12-0. After a West Fargo pin at 120 lbs., Blake Sonnenberg and Brady Borah won back-to-back pins at 126 lbs. and 132 lbs. to make the score 24-6 in favor of Frazee. 

Frazee would only need to win three more matches in the middle to upper weights as Peichel won by fall in overtime at 145 lbs., Moe won by a 7-5 decision at 170 lbs., and Daniel Graham won by fall at 220 lbs. to ice the match for the Hornets.

Jake Nagel took second and Bailey Peichel took seventh plac,e while securing his 50th career win at the Paul Bunyan Invitational over the weekend. 

Nagel advanced to the championship match at 160 lbs., after defeating Bridger Mongeau of Moorhead in the opening round of the tournament by a tech fall. He then defeated Nicholas Leibold of Royalton-Upsala in the quarterfinals by a 10-0 major decision. In the semi-finals, Nagel was able to escape with a 3-2 decision over Alex Jennissen, before he fell to Dane Jorgenson of Bemidji by an 11-3 major decision to leave Nagel with a second place finish. 

Preston Mayfield was another top three finisher for the Hornets as he fell to Seth Newby of Bemidji in the semi-finals by a pin. He then won his next two matches, including a 6-2 decision over Owen Angell of Becker by a score of 6-2 to finish on the podium in sixth place.

  Also placing for the Hornets was Cash Osterman who took fifth place at 113 lbs. after he pinned Jacob DeMarais of Foley at the 3:27 mark of his fifth place match. 

At 138 lbs., Cade Nagel took sixth place after working his way through the elimination bracket. After falling the consolation semi-finals, Nagel dropped a close 7-0 decision to Brady Yourczek of Royalton-Upsala to finish in sixth place.

Peichel secured his 50th career win at the Paul Bunyan Tournament on his way to a seventh place finish. at 145 lbs. Peichel won by a decision over Kobi Cameron of Little Falls by a score of 9-4 to take seventh place.

Tyler Moe went 4-2 on his way to a fifth place finish at 152 lbs. He defeated Lee Ellingsberg of Moorhead by a 1-0 decision in the fifth place match.

Max Rue also placed for the Hornets as the senior took fifth place at 182 lbs., after he won by a medical forfeit over Cade Jackson of Detroit Lakes.

As a team, the Hornets took eighth place with 91.5 points. Bemidji won the tournament with 212 points, while Becker took second place with 210.5 points.
