The popular chili cook-off returns to Frazee on Sunday, Jan. 28 from 1-4 p.m. at the VFW on Main Avenue. The event is open to all ages (to compete and eat) and is the fourth annual celebration held in Bobby Cates’ memory. Corey Baker, who organized the event, noted Cates was a member of the Frazee Lions, VFW and had a fondness for chili.

Drivers were playing chicken with the turkeys on County Road 4 near Fairy Lake in Sunday’s snow. The frigid weather is expected to be followed by a warming trend this week with a high of 34 predicted Friday.

The Frazee-Vergas School District is on track to pay off its final bond in February 2019. The sole bond remaining has $253,722 left to be paid.

Turkey Days 1998 could herald in the arrival of a new turkey sculpture. The Frazee Community Club voted to replace the large turkey sculpture with a fiberglass turkey from DWO Fiberglass Company, Sparta, Wis., at a special board meeting Thursday, Jan. 8. A $15,000 quote was received from Dave Oswald, owner of DWO Fiberglass Company, to replace the large turkey sculpture on Main Avenue. Oswald said he would build a new fiberglass turkey for $14,000 and repair the small one for $1,000. He said he could get the sculptures done in time for the 1998 Turkey Days.

Tim Bauer of Eagle Lake near Frazee gets more than a mention in the newly released book “Doc: Platoon Medic.” The paperback has just hit area bookstores and is the story of Daniel E. Evans Jr., who was a combat medic with the 4th Battalion, 39th Division with whom Bauer served while on his tour in Vietnam. Bauer, who was nicknamed “Sugar Bear” in this book, has already received some ribs regarding his nickname from locals who picked up the new release in an airport.

Frazee’s Hornets won five individual titles as they outwrestled seven area schools to win their 13th Heart O’ Lakes Conference wrestling tournament in 15 years. A capacity crowd was on hand for the evening session of the tournament held Saturday at the Frazee gym.

Wolf Lake V.F.W. Post 8165 will hold its 11th annual fishing derby on Sunday, Jan. 21 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the north end of Big Toad Lake. Grand prize is a 1973 15 hp., 300cc Olympique Ski-Doo Snowmobile; 2nd prize is a portable Color TV set. There will also be drawings for other cash door prizes and cash prizes for the largest game fish caught. Fifty turkeys will also be given away.
