Four wrestlers win individual championship

Jake Nagel inches closer to a pin during Thursday’s triangular against United Clay Becker. One night later, Nagel would go on to win the Heart O’ Lakes Conference tournament.

Four Hornets were crowned as individual champions and the team took first place at the annual Heart O’ Lakes Conference tournament on Friday night. The meet was held in Pelican Rapids, and at the end of the night, the Hornets collected  194.5 team points, compared to 135 points for the second place Perham Yellowjackets.

Preston Mayfield picked up a quick fall against UCB on Thursday night. He would also go on to win a conference title on Friday night. 

The conference title came on the heels of a sweep over United Clay Becker and New York Mills in a triangular in Frazee on Thursday night.

This week the Hornets will travel to United North Central for a triangular on Tuesday night, before heading down Highway 210 for a triangular on Thursday night in Wadena. 

On Friday Frazee’s busy week will wrap up with a dual against Perham. 

Thursday

Frazee swept a triangular against New York Mills and United Clay Becker on Thursday night.

In the opening match of the night, the Hornets cruised to a 70-9 win over United Clay Becker. The Hornets jumped out to a 10-0 lead when Liam Hamm won by a 10-0 major decision over Kody Johnson.

After a pair of United Clay Becker wins at 120 and 126 lbs., the Hornets took over the match as they won the final 10 matches of the night by either fall or forfeit to come away with the commanding 70-9 win. 

Securing wins by a fall were Josh Mellema at 138 lbs., Bailey Peichel at 145 lbs., Tyler Moe at 152 lbs., Jake Nagel at 160 lbs., Preston Mayfield at 170 lbs. and Daniel Graham at 195 lbs. 

In the final match of the night, Frazee once again dominated the middle and upper weights as they defeated New York Mills by a score of 51-15. 

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead when Cash Osterman defeated Carlyle Tumberg by a fall at the 1:18 mark of their 106 lbs. match. Frazee jumped out to a 10-0 lead when Liam Hamm secured an 11-0 major decision over Finn Wallgren, before NY Mills won their first match of the night at 120 lbs. by fall. 

Frazee won the next four matches thanks to a forfeit by Brady Borah, a 6-5 decision by Cade Nagel, pin by Josh Mellema and a major decision by Bailey Peichel at 145 lbs., to put the Hornets in front by a score of 29-6. 

After a decision by Simon Snyder of NY Mills at 152 lbs., Jake Nagel put the Hornets back in the win column thanks to a fall over Gavin Grabow at 160 lbs. Preston Mayfield followed with a 14-3 major decision, Max Rue won an exciting 11-7 decision, Daniel Graham won by a pin at 195 lbs. and Derek Zitzow won by a 6-2 decision at 220 lbs. to put the Hornets in front by a score of 51-9. 

NY Mills won the final match of the night by a pin to make the score 51-15.

Saturday

Four champions were crowned as champions as the Frazee Hornets cruised to the Heart O’ Lakes Conference championship on Friday night. 

As a team, the Hornets scored 194.5 points, while Perham took second place with 135 points. 

Cash Osterman captured first place at 106 lbs. after he defeated Hazen Milbeck of Pelican Rapids by a 12-2 major decision in the semi-finals, before defeating Kody Johnson of United Clay Becker in the championship match by a pin. The pin took place at the 1:07 mark of the championship match. 

Frazee’s second championship came at 145 lbs. when Bailey Peichel won by a tech fall in the semi-finals, before edging Camden Mustachia of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton by a pin at the 5:39 mark of the championship match.

Jake Nagel took first place in a competitive 160 lbs. weight bracket by defeating Reece Henkes of Pelican Rapids by a pin at the 1:29 mark of his quarterfinal match. From there, Nagel was able to pick up a tech fall over Joey Arends of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the semi-finals, before securing his second straight tech fall over Carter Johnson of Pelican Rapids by a score of 15-0 to capture the HOL title.

Preston Mayfield captured the fourth and final individual title as he pinned Thomas Thureen of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the semi-finals at the 3:18 mark of his match. He defeated Mark Kapenga of Pelican Rapids in the 170 lbs. finals by a 6-4 decision.

Also placing for the Hornets was Liam Hamm, who took second place at 113 lbs;, Blake Sonnenberg, who placed third at 120 lbs.; Brady Borah, who took fourth place at 126 lbs.; Josh Mellema, who took second place at 138 lbs.; Tyler Moe, who took second place at 152 lbs.; Max Rue, who took second place at 182 lbs.; Daniel Graham, who took second place at 195 lbs.; Derek Zitzow, who took fourth place at 220 lbs. and Xander Kohler, who took third place at 285 lbs.
