Perham, Frazee come together for Hoops for Hope

The Perham Yellowjackets and the Frazee Hornets may be rivals on the court, but the two programs are coming together for a good cause when they square off on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Hive in Perham.
The Heart O’Lakes Conference rivals have come together to hold a Color Out Cancer Night at the Hive.
Admission to the event is free as it’s the annual Battle of the Bees game presented by United Community Bank.
“To be able to bring in my great friends, with this unbelievable cause, is really something special. And having UCB be a part of it by paying for everyone to come to the game is awesome,” Perham head coach T.J. Super said. “Our hope is that people will be even more willing to donate because of it!”
Fans attending the game are encouraged to wear any bright color shirt. There will be 200 shirts to be given away, including 100 youth and 100 adult-sized shirts.
Color Out Cancer is an effort to raise money for Hoops for Hope, which is a branch of the Jimmy V. Cancer Foundation.
Hoops For Hope was started in 2006 by the Brumwell family as a way to raise funds and awareness in the battle against cancer. The first Hoops for Hope Tournament was organized by Ryan and Jason Brumwell along with their mother Diane, who was in the middle of her battle with Ovarian Cancer. Shortly after the inaugural event, Diane was taken by the disease but this only brought forth the importance of continuing the event for the brothers. Their goal was to make sure no one else had to experience the hurt and loss of losing someone as important to them as Diane.
Now in its 17th year, the organization has banded together with great communities such as Perham and Frazee and individuals who have raised nearly $600,000 for cancer research.
Perham head coach T.J. Super has been a part of Hoops for Hope since its inception, 18 years ago.
The first tournament, which originated in Red Lake Falls, featured four teams, but has since grown to 16-20 teams participating. The tournament features a spaghetti dinner, bags tournament, silent auction and many other great events.
Super said it was great that Frazee came together for this great cause, especially with the recent stories of sports bringing out the worst in people. This is an event that helps bring out the best in sports and people.
“We know that records don’t matter when we play Frazee, it’s always a battle when we play. And with the recent disheartening stories about sports bringing out the worst in people in the area, this should be a great reminder that there’s more to sports than just winning and losing,” Super said. “We love doing charitable things for the community and with our rival/friends Frazee taking part in it, it makes it even more special.”
