Frazee to host DGF, Perham in HOL Conference action

The Frazee Hornets improved to 4-9 on the season with a non-conference win over New York Mills on Saturday afternoon. The win comes on the heels of a pair of losses last week as Frazee lost to Battle Lake on Tuesday night by a score of 89-52 and Pelican Rapids by a score of 60-49 on Thursday night.

This week the Hornets will host Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Tuesday night and Perham on Friday night in a pair of Heart O’ Lakes Conference games. 

Tuesday

Battle Lake took advantage of its home court advantage on Tuesday night as the Battlers defeated Frazee by a score of 89-52. The Battlers shot 56.5 percent from the field and hit 15 3-pointers to come away with the win. They led by a score of 46-30 at halftime.

Frazee, on the other hand, shot 28.4 percent from the field and pulled down 18 offensive rebounds in the loss. 

The Hornets were led offensively by Alex Helmers who scored 14 points, while Asher Blaine chipped in with 13 points of his own. Carter Sonnenberg scored 7 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Thursday

The first time through the conference schedule, Pelican Rapids defeated the Frazee Hornets by a score of 73-51. This time around the game was much closer as the Hornets withstood a number of Viking runs to nearly outscore Pelican Rapids in the second half. After taking a 32-23 lead at halftime, the Vikings outscored the Hornets by a 28-26 margin in the second half.

The big different in the game came from the 3-point line and free throw line as the Vikings outshot the Hornets from behind the arc by going 6-17, compared to just 2-13 for Frazee. Pelican Rapids also went 14-20 from the free throw line, compared to just 9-16 for Frazee. 

The Hornets shot 37.3 percent from the field and made the most of their second chances as they held a 30-24 advantage in second chance points. 

Frazee was led offensively by Carter Sonnenberg with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Asher Blaine scored 13 points. Kale Ovsak chipped in with 7 points off of just 3-5 shooting.

Saturday

Frazee had a solid game on the defensive end of the court on Saturday as the Hornets gave up just 9 points in the first half and forced 29 turnovers as they went on to defeat New York Mills by a score of 61-41. 

The Hornets shot 43.4 percent from the floor and went 11-15 from the free throw line. The Hornets led 28-9 at halftime. 

As a team the Hornets held a commanding 29-5 advantage in points off of turnovers, as well as a 19-4 advantage in transition points. Frazee also forced 20 steals to lead to one of their best defensive performances of the season. 

Asher Blaine led the charge offensively as he finished with 15 points off of just 5-9 shooting. Also reaching double figures was Alex Helmers and Carter Sonnenberg who both scored 10 points. Sonnenberg also led the team with 7 rebounds in the win. 

Adam Vigen and Gage Post chipped in with 7 points apiece, while Kale Ovsak scored 6 points.
