The Vergas Trail Committee accepted a $595 donation from the Vergas Municipal Liquor Store, which it made from a recent food fundraiser at Skal Bar and Grill. Including pledges, the trail committee has about $100,000 in its coffers for the latest project. Vergas City Clerk Julie Lammers shared there were a variety of pizzas provided, from wild gem to Mac n’ cheese to the more traditional flavors along with different flavored beers to compliment the pies.

Luke Tweeton, son of Dan and Tracy, Frazee, caught a 37-inch northern pike on Devils Lake last weekend on a family trip to visit his brother Josh who lives there. The fish was not weighed because it was a catch and release.

The city of Vergas designated an official maple tree in preparation of a new guessing game for Maple Syrup Fest, which is slated for April 7. Mayor Haarstick will tap the official maple tree across the street from the Vergas Event Center Thursday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. After the tree is tapped a bucket will be placed near the spigot as well as a webcam. Then guesses can be made as to when the bucket will overflow with sap. The contest ends March 15.

The merchandise will be like-new, but soon Gary’s Furniture on East Main in Frazee will be having a heck of a “fire” sale. While the flames didn’t lap at the furniture, there was some smoke damage during a fire last Friday morning at the store. Firemen were called to the scene at 8:42 a.m. The fire started in the walls of a new addition in the back of the store, which was quickly extinguished. Firemen credit Gary’s employee Tom Golkowski with preventing more serious structural damage by putting out a portion of the blaze with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.

Kim Smith has opened Dogs “RRR” Us, a canine grooming and boarding service. She will operate the business from her home located off Highway 10 between Frazee and Detroit Lakes. “I’m excited, and I’m anxious to build the business,” said Kim. The opening represents a new service as well as a maximization of local skills.

If all goes well in March, Nancy Hebert of Frazee will be the new Mrs. Minnesota. Hebert, who is currently Mrs. Becker County, will be heading to the Mrs. Minnesota International competition with a platform that emphasizes putting family in the forefront of one’s life.

Becker County voters will go to the polls March 13 to vote on a referendum deciding whether or note to replace the Sunnyside Rest Home at Lake Park. This election date was set as it is the date of county township annual elections, so special elections will be needed only in cities and villages.

The Frazee-Vergas School Board finalized the revision of its insurance program by approving the contract and payment of the first premium at its regular meeting Feb. 12.
