The local councils of the Knights of Columbus hosted their 2023 District 12 Free Throw Championship on Sunday, February 12, at Holy Rosary School in Detroit Lakes.

The event drew the winners of area council level competitions, including those from the Sacred Heart Council No. 12581 competition, which was held in Frazee in late January.

District champions crowned in the boys’ division from Frazee were Jace Mekalson and Ben Reierson. Girls’ division champions from Frazee included Katie Courneya and Jayden Sonnenberg.

Sonnenberg showcased her shooting skills by making all 25 of her free throw attempts. Each of these winners will now compete in the Region 6 competition to be held on Sunday, March 5, in Sauk Centre, with an eye on moving to the state and international levels.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in 1882 to assist working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, today the approximately two million members of the Knights put their faith into action through a broad range of charitable causes locally, nationally, and internationally with financial contributions and hands-on service.
