An investigation into the severance package paid out to former Audubon clerk-treasurer Stephanie Poegel, deemed the payment to be correct, according to the Audubon employee handbook.

An issue of missing funds was called into question by Poegel’s replacement Shallene Stephenson in January.

The case began with the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, but was transferred to the Moorhead City Prosecutor’s Office for final review, due to a conflict of interest claim by the city attorney in Audubon.

Stephenson initiated the investigation when reporting to the sheriff’s office alleged missing city funds of $7,235 and said she believed that Poegel “wrote herself a check.”

Poegel has cooperated and spoken with investigators.

The Moorhead City Prosecutor’s Office declined to pursue charges stemming from the report and other information provided.

The city of Audubon is currently undergoing an audit by an outside organization.

Poegel left the Audubon job in December to replace Jordin Roberts as the city administrator in Frazee.
