Tire deflation devices used to stop vehicle from fleeing

Bobby James Newborn, 20 of East Grand Forks, was arrested for Fleeing a Police Officer, felony Possession of Marijuana, and outstanding felony warrants Tuesday, March 28, after a high speed chase that began in Frazee.

At approximately 4:24 p.m. on Tuesday, a state trooper asked for assistance with locating a Dodge Charger that was clocked traveling over 100 miles per hour just west of Frazee on County Highway 10. A short time later, a Becker County Sheriff’s sergeant advised he had located the vehicle and the vehicle was now fleeing westbound on County Highway 10. The vehicle then merged onto U.S. highway 10 and continued at a high rate of speed.

Deputies with tire deflation devices were set up at the intersection of County Highway 54 on Highway 10. The suspect vehicle hit the deflation devices, but continued westbound. The suspect vehicle hit another tire deflation device set by a Detroit Lakes Police Officer at the overpass of Highway 10 and Roosevelt Avenue, but the vehicle continued westbound. At this point, the decision was made to terminate the pursuit.

The vehicle continued westbound on Hwy. 10, and officers engaged in the pursuit again west of U.S. Highway 59 on U.S. Highway 10. The suspect vehicle then slowed and eventually went into the ditch just east of West Long Lake Road.

The Minnesota State Patrol, Frazee Police Department, Detroit Lakes Police Department, and Essentia- St. Mary’s EMS assisted the Sheriff’s Office. There were no injuries and no vehicles damaged other than the suspect vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.

A passenger in the vehicle was released without criminal charges.
