Hornets improve to 7-7 overall

Asher Blaine gave up no hits and struck out 10 batters in the final game of a doubleheader against Breckenridge on Thursday night. The game capped off a busy week with four games in just three days, all of which were in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference.

Heading into the final two weeks of regular season action the Hornets are 7-7 on the season. 

Frazee hosted Lake Park-Audubon on Monday night, before they will travel to Barnesville on Thursday for another conference doubleheader. 

Tuesday

Frazee came out on the short end of a 6-0 game against Perham on Tuesday night. The Hornets came away with 4 hits in the loss, but were unable to overcome 4 errors that led to 4 unearned runs.

The Yellowjackets scored single runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings, while scoring 3 runs in the top of the second inning.

Mark Jaroszewski took the loss on the mound while pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up 5 hits and just 1 earned run. He struck out 8 hitters in the loss.

Wednesday

Meeting for the second time in as many days, Perham completed the series sweep against Frazee by coming away with a 12-2 win over the Hornets on Wednesday. 

The Hornets took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Zach Longfors hit an RBI double to bring Kale Ovsak across the plate from second base. The Yellowjackets tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning, before taking the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning with another run. They also scored 6 runs in the third inning, 1 in the fourth and 3 in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Frazee’s other run came in the top of the sixth inning on a Mark Jaroszewski RBI single to right field that brought Zach Longfors across the plate. 

Longfors led the way offensively for the Hornets with a pair of hits, including a double. 

Drew Mekalson took the loss on the mound as he pitched 6 innings and gave up 10 hits and just 3 unearned runs. Frazee committed 9 errors in the field in the loss.

Thursday

Frazee honored its seniors on Thursday night and watched as senior Carson Maneval threw out the ceremonial first pitch as the Hornets got back in the win column in a big way with a two-game sweep over Breckenridge.

In the opening game of the night, Frazee blew past Breckenridge in the bottom of the fifth inning with a big 5-run inning to overcome an early deficit to the Cowboys. The Hornets broke a 4-4 tie when Kale Ovsak earned a bases loaded walk, before Caden Frank hit a bases loaded single to bring Gage Post across the plate to make the score 6-4. Zach Longfors followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-4 in favor of Frazee, before Tyler Moe and Frank scored on passed balls to make the score 9-4. 

Just one inning later, the Hornets added 3 more runs on a wild pitch and a 2-run double by Longfors. 

Ovsak and Mark Jaroszewski led the way offensively with 3 hits in the win, while Frank and Post each finished with 2. 

Derek Zitzow picked up the win on the mound as he went 5 innings and struck out 6 hitters. He gave up just 2 unearned runs.

In the second game of the night, Asher Blaine threw a no-hitter as he went all 5 innings and struck out 10 hitters in a 6-0 win over the Cowboys. 

The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Jaroszewski hit a fielder’s choice to bring Longfors across the plate. 

Frazee added 3 more runs in the third inning and a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning on a 2-run triple by Longfors to come away with the 6-0 win. 

Longfors led the way offensively with a pair of hits and RBIs in the win.
