Frazee receives seventh seed in sub section tournament

The Frazee Hornets wrapped up their regular season last week with a split against Pelican Rapids. The doubleheader finished a busy week of action for the Hornets with five games total and four games in just two days in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference.

Frazee finished its regular season with a record of 4-16 overall and 3-9 record in the HOL. The team will now gear up for the sub section tournament, which kicks off this week. 

The Hornets received the seventh seed in the sub section tournament and will travel to second seeded Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday night. The Wolverines finished with a record of 14-6 overall. The winner of the game will take on either third seeded Barnesville or sixth seeded Pelican Rapids on Thursday at Frazee High School at 4 p.m. The sub section championship will be on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Frazee.

On the other side of the bracket, Breckenridge/Wahpeton received the top seed and will take on either eighth seeded Otter Tail Central or ninth seeded Perham on Tuesday, while fourth seeded Hawley will host fifth seeded Fergus Falls in the opening round.

The section tournament will continue next week. 

Tuesday

Trailing 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Frazee Hornets made a game of it with the go-ahead run at the plate and the tying run on first base. Unfortunately, a feverish comeback effort fell just short as the Hornets fell by a score of 7-6.

The highlight of the big inning was a Kate Vigen RBI double to bring Alexis Heaton across the plate to score. 

Heaton led the way offensively with a pair of singles, while seven Hornets picked up a hit in the loss. 

Thursday

Frazee dropped a pair of games to Barnesville in HOL action on Thursday night.

In the opening game of the day, Riyan Eckert retired the first seven Trojans she faced in order, before giving up a double with one out in the top of the third inning. The Trojans broke a scoreless tie with 2 runs in the third inning, before Ashley Malikowski and Faith Hamm hit back-to-back 2-run singles in the bottom of the third inning to put the Hornets up by a score of 4-2. 

Faith Hamm scored a pair of runs during last week’s game against Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Tuesday night.

Barnesville broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning with a 5-run inning to take a 7-2 lead. 

Hamm hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for her third RBI of the game. Malikowski finished with 3 hits in the loss, including her 2-run single in the third inning. 

In the second game of the night, Evie Seim went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and Brea Paurus went 1-3 with an RBI of her own as the Hornets fell to the Trojans by a score of 13-7. 

Heaton and Ally Bessler also finished with a pair of hits as eight Hornets finished with at least 1 hit in the loss. 

Friday

In their regular season finale, the Frazee Hornets split a doubleheader with Pelican Rapids on Friday night. 

In the opening game of the night, the bats came alive for a big way for the Hornets in the bottom of the first inning as they scored 5 runs on 6 hits on their way to a 9-4 win over the Vikings. 

Alexis Heaton and Kate Vigen led off the inning with back-to-back singles, before Ashley Malikowski connected with a one out double to bring Heaton around to score. Faith Hamm and Ellie Trieglaff followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make the game 4-0 in favor of the Hornets. Hailee Olson followed with a sacrifice fly to make the game 5-0. 

After Pelican Rapids added 3 runs in the top of the second inning, Frazee struck again in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of RBI singles by Rylea Sandberg and Ally Bessler to put the Hornets in front by a score of 7-3. Frazee added 2 more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Trieglaff fielder’s choice and Olson single to put the Hornets in front 9-3. 

Malikowski led the way offensively with 3 hits, while Heaton, Hamm, Trieglaff, Sandberg and Bessler each finished with a pair of hits. 

In the nightcap, Pelican Rapids broke open a 5-4 game in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring 5 runs to come away with a 10-5 win over the Hornets. 

Frazee was led offensively by Olson who had a big game by going 3-4 with 3 RBIs, including a 2-run single in the top of the fifth inning. Hamm also went 2-2 with 3 runs scored and a double in the loss.
