Notes from the Chief
We had a pretty successful pancake feed for the Frazee Rescue Squad last Sunday. We served around 460 people and the weather was perfect. The line never got too long and the griddles kept up for the most part. Thank you to all who attended and supported Frazee Rescue.
On to the farm…Haying season is in full swing. After pancakes that Sunday, I was in the baler until midnight getting our first crop of alfalfa baled up. As of press time, we have about 160 bales rolled up and a bunch in the shed already. We unloaded the last of the small square bales in the shed as the neighbor needed the wagon back. Dad and I decided that we did not need to make any small squares this year as we did not use all we made last year. There is still half a wagon of alfalfa squares that need to be unloaded. They may just stay there until someone comes calling for a few here and there. We will slowly keep chugging along making hay. The good alfalfa is up so with the making of the grass hay we don’t need to be as particular.
One thing that may hamper the operation is the old tractor I’m using. A 1969 John Deere 4020 that has lost some gears. Gears 2, 5,R2, 4 and 7 are out; fourth and fifth gears are the perfect speed for baling and they are not working very well; third gear is like a snail’s pace and 6th gear bounces me around the cab so much that it isn’t any fun to bale that way.
We are not sure what we will do, but I do know there are some used transmissions for sale on the interwebs. Time will tell if we decide to repair or replace the transmission, it all depends on the timeframe of the repair shop.
Have a good week!
