Teenager was attending summer camp

A 13-year-old boy died after a boating accident near Frazee Thursday, June 22.

The boy was later identified by the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s office as Benjamin Rennie of the Andover/Coon Rapids. Rennie was attending North Central Camp Cherith Christian summer camp at the time of the incident.

According to the report, Rennie and another juvenile were riding on an inner tube being pulled by a boat operated by camp employee Meghan Westra, 27, of Fargo. Both juveniles fell off the tube and Rennie was accidentally struck by the boat as they were attempting to pick him up.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m., on Lake Six, five miles southwest of Frazee.

The teenager was pulled from the water and camp staff attempted life-saving efforts, while emergency crews were responding to the scene, but were unsuccessful.

The boy was airlifted by helicopter at approximately 6 p.m., and flown to the Perham Health Emergency Department.

Kendra Mohn, Camp Cherith Executive Director, released a statement about the incident Friday morning.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I share with you a tragedy that occurred at North Central Camp Cherith this afternoon,” she said. “At about 4:15 p.m. a camper died in a boating accident. Staff members attempted life-saving care, while emergency responders were enroute. I am sad to say, professionals were not able to save the camper’s life. Please pray for this camper’s family and all those grieving after this accident.”

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident and foul play was also ruled out.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the office’s Water Patrol Division, Vergas Fire and Rescue, Perham Ambulance and Life Link III medical transport company.
