Small sheds have been popping up in Vergas, and the Vergas Planning Commission agreed to place a moratorium on any new structures at its monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 27. The sheds are stated to be less than 120 square feet, therefore not requiring a construction permit. Commission members were concerned about the strength of such a structure and whether the object would become flying debris in a windstorm. In addition a few saw them as eyesores.

No one knows for sure, but there is speculation that the heavy wind that hit the Frazee-Vergas area on Friday night may have been a small tornado. The wind, estimated at over 100 miles per hour, destroyed many trees and did other damage. No persons, however, were reported injured. The erratic pattern in which the wind hit hardest and the twisting of some trees led to the tornado speculations.

In Frazee, the mayor’s term and two council members’ terms are expiring. Of the three incumbents, two say they won’t run for re-election, and the third is undecided. In Vergas, the mayor’s term and two council members’ are also expiring. Of the three incumbents, one says he won’t run for re-election, another says she probably won’t, and the third said he is undecided but leaning away from it.
