The floating boardwalk in Vergas is one step closer to becoming a reality. It’s going to be hard getting the smile of my face today,” said Sherri Hanson, a member of the Vergas Long Lake Trail Committee. The committee was told at the monthly trail meeting on Wednesday, July 25 that the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) will recommend the state legislature provide $290,000 in funding for the boardwalk. The funds would come from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund in 2019.

When Thomas Batchelder lost his father to cancer he grew closer to God. “I was 19,” he said. “It was very difficult, but the peace of Christ spoke to me. I also saw how it helped my family get through such a difficult time. I realized I wanted to share that peace and comfort with others.” Batchelder was half way through his first year of college when he decided on a new career path. “I was going to be a game warden,” he said. “I finished my generals and then transferred to Concordia College in St. Paul.” After earning his undergraduate, he attended seminary school at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind. With a little more than a month remaining in his schooling, Batchelder received his first call to serve at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Evergreen.

Brooklyn Nelson, 2, daughter of Mike and Kandy of rural Detroit Lakes, took third place in the non-motorized division of the Turkey Days pet and doll parade while riding her miniature pony Turner. Aunt Kathie Sago lead the horse for Brooklyn. Their float represented Sonny Brooks Stables of Detroit Lakes.

A Frazee boy escaped being run over by a train Saturday when a passerby jumped from his car and rescued the youth. Joey Covey, 9, had just gone past one set of railroad crossers on Lake Street when the crossers came down. Somewhat panicked, Joey swerved to go around the outside of the second set of arms and crashed his bicycle in the middle of the tracks. Joey was crying and screaming, with his bike lying on top of him, when Gerardo Mendieta saw the oncoming train bearing down on the very tracks where the child lay. Medieta quickly jumped from his vehicle, flung the bike off the child and had just enough time to pick up the child and take a flying backwards leap to avoid the train, said Mendieta’s wife Bernie. The train was so close, Mendieta could see the startled eyes of the conductor.

DuWayne Jepson, a Frazee-Vergas fifth grader, was recently honored at Valleyfair Amusement Park, Shakopee, Minn., as a top achiever in the 1998 READaTHON. Through the program, students read books to raise money for programs, services and research.

Details on the 1973 hunting and trapping seasons were announced today by Commissioner of Natural Resources Robert Herbst, on all species but waterfowl. Several changes in deer zones and dates, a bucks only zone, a special Southeast ruffed grouse December season and a decrease in the ruffed grouse bag limit are among the changes for this year. As last year, Minnesota deer hunters will have a 30 day framework in which to choose dates and places, but there will be three optional time periods in zones one and three instead of the two of last year.
