Jill Shipman was working with Otter Tail County when she learned of a disheveled house owned by suspected drug addicts. Inside were two dachshunds with patches of hair missing on their rail-thin bodies. “I figured their hair fell out due to the stressful conditions they lived in,” Shipman said. “I talked to my husband (Haden Shipman) and we agreed to try and save at least on of them.” Shipman said they approached the owners, who were happy to sell a dog to them.

Ellen Teiken is the newly crowned Miss Vergas and by her side is Princess Altona Faith Jepson. The Vergas Event Center was filled for the annual crowning of Miss Vergas, Miss Altona and the newly added junior royalty pageant on Thursday, Aug. 9. The entire group of contestants performed an opening number to the song “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.

Wirth places 19th at motocross championship—Grayson Wirth’s 6-year-old hands gripped the handlebars of his motocross bike as he sped onto the track at the Rocky Mountain amateur national motocross championship. The son of Kris and Adrian Wirth turned a corner and ran into the back end of another rider who took a break from racing to wave at his mother in the crowd.

A local firm had a key role in WE Fest, the gigantic county music festival that took place near Detroit Lakes over the weekend. The firm is Anderson Bus Co. of Frazee and the key role is the specialty for which it has developed its reputation—providing transportation. Last Thursday, the firm was contracted by Shooting Star Casino, Mahnomen, to transport fans between the WE Fest grounds and the casino, which featured a free concert by country music performer Mark Wills.

A group of four bowlers will be taking over operations at Zee Lanes and want to start getting leagues organized. Bob Matthews, a former owner of the lanes, will be acting manager with partners Mark Kemper, Greg Mickelson and Brian Mickelson. The foursome signed a lease agreement with owners Gene and Mary Ann Miller Monday. The Millers closed the lanes for the summer in late May.

After almost two years, Frazee phone customers will get to vote on whether or not to dial the Detroit Lakes calling area without a long distance charge. Frazee phone customers can expect a $11-$16 increase in phone rates if equal access service were expanded to include Detroit Lakes. A simple majority (over 50 percent) is needed to expand the service, said Minn. Public Utilities Commission Telecommunications Specialist Cathy Murray.

Kathy Palmer, Miss Frazee 1972, made her final appearance as queen of Frazee Turkey Days as she greeted the large crowd from the Frazee Community Club float in the Turkey Day Parade on Sunday.

Julie Annette Coruneya, 18, was crowned Miss Frazee 1973 at the conclusion of the Miss Frazee Pageant Saturday night. Julie is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Gerald Courneya of rural Frazee and a 1973 graduate of Frazee High School. She is the third daughter of the Courneyas to reign as Turkey Days queen, preceded by Judy in 1961 and Cathy in 1964.

The Frazee United Methodist women held their annual Flower Show last Thursday, Aug. 2. 178 arrangement entries were judged. A children’s division was also judged. Grand champions of the four divisions are: Centerpiece by Bernice Frahm; White Begonia by Bernice Frahm; Garden Geranium by Mabel Villiard; and in the Children’s Division a white Gladiola by Queniette Hjelter.
