The Vergas City Council called an emergency council meeting on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 9 a.m., to discuss the purchase of the property at 131 East Main Street.

Mayor Julie Bruhn and Councilmembers Bruce Albright, Paul Pinke, Natalie Fischer and Dean Haarstick met in a closed session, according to minutes provided by Clerk/Treasurer Julie Lammers.

A motion by Pinke was seconded by Haarstick to give Lammers authorization to enter into a purchase agreement for the discussed amount during the closed session. The motion passed unanimously.

The 2,170 square foot commercial property built in 1963 was recently listed for $175,000. It includes 950 square feet of unleased space, the remaining space houses the U.S. Post Office. The unleashed space was the former location of Furey Funeral Home.

Preliminary plans are to use the unleased space to expand city offices with future discussions to be had on the current city offices potentially being used by the liquor store.
