Notes from the Chief

I get comments from fans quite often about my articles in the paper and even more grief sometimes when I don’t have a commentary.

A few weeks ago, a gentleman came up to me and told me how much he liked reading my column. We then talked about farming for 10 minutes or so. Way back in the day, when I started my Chief columns, I heard that some folks as far away as Florida were taking my column and putting it on the bulletin board at their workplace.

This past week, I received a letter in the mail from Nebraska. At first, I thought it was a solicitation, but it turned out to be from a couple that has ties to the Vergas area. They told me how much they enjoy reading the “occasional nuggets of humor” in the police report. They also may be a shirt-tail relative to me as one’s mother was a cousin to my grandma, Eleanor (Kraus) Trieglaff. Thank you to all my faithful readers!

Some of the cows will hopefully be home by the time you read this. We are planning to bring two different groups home to allow the pastures some regrowth before winter. This will allow for a healthier root base for a better start next spring. With the extra cows at the home farm, we will supplement the pastures with some corn silage left over from last year. We may grind some poorer hay with the tub grinder and then add the corn silage which should make a tasty treat for the cows and calves. Once all the pairs are at home, we will give the calves their first round of vaccinations or preconditioning. The calves will go back to mama for another month or so until we decide to wean them and then the calves will get their booster shots.

By the time you read this school will have started. Please be aware of the littles walking or biking to school. Also pay attention to the flashing lights on the big yellow school buses. If you are dropping your kids off at the schools, please use the appropriate drop off areas at the elementary and high school.

If you drop the kids off on State Hwy 87, please use the parking lot or the drop off area. We understand if there is traffic backed up due to people crossing at the crosswalk, but do not drop your kids off while still in the traffic lane. I also ask that teachers, students and visitors use the push button light at the crosswalk on State Hwy 87.

The police will be giving extra patrol the first few days of the school year to help retrain the new parents and the habitual offenders. Let’s have a safe school year!
