Suspect blows through Vergas, Frazee at high speeds

A Frazee man was charged in Becker County District Court with two felony counts of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), and misdemeanor counts of reckless driving and fourth-degree damage to property.

According to court records, a rural Frazee man called to report that a white four-door Toyota had gone through the yard of a residence, causing damage on Saturday, June 24.

The suspect was identified as Alex Carlin Maves, 34, of Frazee. 

His speeding spree began in Vergas.

A witness told officers she noticed Maves had spent the prior evening at a neighbor’s in Vergas and witnessed him speeding away from the neighbor’s house. Because of his erratic driving, she followed Maves and witnessed him damage a stop sign in Vergas before continuing to Frazee. She continued her pursuit and saw Maves at a residence walking in the driveway. Maves cursed at the woman to get out of his driveway.

She got out of her vehicle to try to tell Maves to slow down. He grabbed a landscaping rock and threw it at her vehicle, damaging the passenger side window. 

Later, a Frazee Police Officer saw the suspect vehicle drive into Frazee and drive through a stop sign at approximately 80-90 miles per hour. 

The officer activated emergency lights and engaged in a pursuit continuing through Frazee intersections at a high rate of speed. Maves ran through another stop sign.

Maves escaped the pursuit but was arrested after police received a phone call that he was at a residence in rural Frazee. The caller was not at his residence, but saw Maves on his home security camera and informed police Maves was not welcome there. 

While in jail, Maves refused to submit to chemical testing.

Maves has a prior conviction of DWI in 2015 and two more in Idaho in the past decade.

Bail or bond was set at $30,000 with no conditions, or $15,000 bond or $1,500 cash bail with standard conditions of release.

His next court hearing is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 22.
