On a sheet of paper Frazee Elementary kindergarten parents wrote their hopes and dreams for their children. Later the paper was attached to a helium balloon. The students released the balloons on Friday, Sept. 14, showing them that the sky is the limit.

Joe Rocha’s reality was out of focus a few years ago, but a new retreat in the Smoky Hills gave him a clear perspective and purpose. Rocha is the go-to maintenance guy at The Branches, a resort that recently opened. While everyone is welcome to use the facility, it offers special opportunities for veterans to bond with families and partake in hunting or fishing excursion.

Colorful rocks, some with artwork and others with inspirational words, have made an appearance in Frazee, Vergas and surrounding communities in recent weeks. It is likely the unique rocks were left by the F/M Rock Hounds. Sue Manson, a resident of Cormorant, is a retired teacher from Texas. She started the group with her friend of more than 30 years, Terry Loveless of Fargo, N. D. “I thought it would be a fun summer project,” Monson said.

The idea is to give students job experiences that are somehow related to their career goals. It’s being put into practice this year at Frazee High School in a new occupational placement class. Through the semester-long class, juniors and seniors are placed with local businesses and agencies and given work to do that is related to their future plans, or at least potential future plans. The number of hours per week each student works and whether he or she will get paid will vary with each individual situation.

“One of the reasons we’re longing here is because we think Frazee wants to grow,” said Rich Zastrow. Zastrow and John Jensen are the owner-operators of Frazee’s newest business-to-be, Frazee Collectible & Sport, 104 E. Main Avenue. An exact opening date has not yet been set, but they hope it’s before the end of September. As the name implies, the business will deal in sports supplies and collectible items.

A spirited Profile of Learning discussion was the highest-profile item at Monday’s Frazee School Board meeting. Those attending the meeting heard compliments about how well the school district is preparing for Minnesota’s Profile of Learning graduation rule, under which students must meet state-specified requirements before graduating. Some of those attending the meeting, however, indicated reservations about the grad rule.

Rev. Martin Langemo was guest speaker at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday. He, his wife and children from St. John’s Lutheran in Wheaton, have transferred to Bethlehem Lutheran and live in rural Frazee. Welcome to the community.

“If all the homes in the United States were heated with heat pumps instead of their present heating systems the nation would save the equivalent of 200,000 carloads of coal each year. Also as the cost of energy goes up and the need for fuel conservation increases, the value of equipment such as the heat pump increases substantially.” These comments were made recently by Mr. V. A. Rydbeck, market development consultant for the General Electric Company of Schenectady of New York.

Free Blood Pressure Clinics, sponsored by the Ottertail County Nursing Service, will be held on October 3 at the Loon’s Nest Cafe in Vergas from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and in the afternoon at Senior Citizen’s Center in Perham from 1-3 p.m.
