Frazee falls to Hawley in HOL action

It’s not even October yet and the Frazee Hornets have already secured more wins than they had since prior to the COVID-19  pandemic. Last week the Hornets picked up their fifth win of the season with a 3-0 sweep over Rothsay in non-conference action. The five wins are the most the Hornets have secured since the team went 13-12 in 2019.

On Thursday night, Frazee fell to 0-2 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference to fall to 0-2 in the conference and 5-8 overall.

This week the Hornets will travel to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Thursday night, before traveling to Barnesville on Saturday for a tournament. On Monday the Hornets will travel just a few miles north and take on the Menahga Braves in non-conference action. 

September 12

The Hornets dropped a tough five game match to Sebeka by a score of 3-2 on September 12. The Hornets opened the match with a resounding 25-15 win in the first game, before dropping the next two games by scores of 25-17 and 27-25. 

With their backs against the wall, the Hornets came through with a big 25-13 win in the fourth game to force a fifth and decisive game. Unfortunately, the Trojans were able to get the best of the Hornets and came away with a 15-9 win to take the match 3-2.

Sophia Strand had 14 assists in Frazee’s 3-0 win over Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal.

The Hornets were led offensively by Elsie Ratz with 13 kills, while Riyan Eckert finished with 11 and Jayden Sonnenberg finished with 9. Sonnenberg also led the team in blocks with 4 solo and 3 assist blocks, while Eckert had 3 aces and Sophia Strand chipped in with 2 aces of her own.

Hailey Selly led the Hornets with 31 digs and Hailee Olson and Strand finished with 21 and 12 assists respectively. 

September 14

Frazee secured a big non-conference win over Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on September 14 by a score of 3-0. 

The Hornets swept the Titans by securing a 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 win thanks to a dominating night at the net for Frazee.

The trio of Elsie Ratz, Riyan Eckert and Jayden Sonnenberg led the way offensively with 10, 9 and 8 kills respectively. Sonnenberg finished with 5 solo blocks and 2 assist blocks, while Hailey Selly and Ratz finished with 17 and 15 digs. 

Hailee Olson and Sophia Strand were busy throughout the night on the offensive end with 17 and 14 assists and Eckert finished with 4 ace serves to lead the charge. 

Tuesday

Frazee won its second straight non-conference match on Tuesday night when they Hornets secured a 3-0 win over the Rothsay Tigers.

The Hornets opened the match with a 25-23 win, before defeating the Tigers 25-17, 25-17 in the second and third games to come away with the three game sweep.

Riyan Eckert once again led the way with 11 kills and 4 aces, while Elsie Ratz chipped in with 8 kills and 11 digs. Jayden Sonnenberg finished with 5 kills, while Hailey Selly led the team with 15 digs. 

Hailee Olson and Sophia Strand kept the offense moving throughout the night with 12 and 11 assists respectively.

Thursday

Frazee fell to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference with a 3-0 loss to Hawley on Thursday night. 

Hawley opened the match with a close 25-20 win in the first game, before the Nuggets came away with 25-14, 25-14 wins to secure the sweep.

The Hornets were led offensively by Brynn Larson, Jayden Sonnenberg and Elsie Ratz who all finished with 3 kills apiece. Hailee Olson and Sophia Strand finished with 27 and 21 assists, while Riyan Eckert finished with 3 aces and Olson finished with 3.

Defensively, Hailey Selly finished with 13 digs, while Ratz finished with 12 digs.
