In the future, Frazee may have a restructured Main Avenue, a new use for the current Swift plant property, and between 50 and 80 units of new housing with a concentration on the east side of the Otter. This time of year, the smartest turkeys are taking shelter at Viola Dam’s in rural Frazee. Actually, Viola has about 120 turkeys which stay with her all year ‘round, and being smart doesn’t have anything to do with their fortunate status. Most of them were made to go on the table, but they’re not edible. They’re ceramic, and many of the gobblers in her collections are salt and pepper shakers. She attributes the beginning of her hobby to her late husband Fred, who began work at Lakeland Turkey Plant in Frazee in the spring of 1946. The company was located where the Swift plant is now, and Fred served as Lakeland’s manager for about 14 years.
