Vergas residents met on Tuesday, Dec. 4 to review a proposed street project and attached assessments. The assessments are estimates as the actual cost would not be known until after the project is bid. Once that happens, residents would have another opportunity to address the council for contest assessments. The city brought in Northland Securities to discuss the $1.145 million bond the city would need to take out for the project. It was stated the assessments would cover about $708,000 of the project. The city would levy to pay for its portion and the council can opt for up to a 20 year term.

Trees will be cut, bridges may be added and the city needs to decide if a path will be part of the State Highway 87 renovation plans. About 50 people showed up for a public meeting hosted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the Frazee Event Center. The project was broken down into phases, with the rural section that covers about 30 miles costing $18 million the and the city portion that covers about a mile estimated to cost $4 million.

The Vergas Economic Development Authority (EDA) has set in motion their plans to launch a matching grant program for Vergas business owners. The EDA discovered plans to commit up to $10,000 for qualifying businesses that are approved through the Vergas EDA’s grant application process. Those funds would be utilized to match funds for businesses that are looking to grow, expand or add new jobs to their operations.

A local Camp Fire group, the Toad Lake Township Little Flames, is inviting area residents to share the spirit of the season with others less fortunate. Group leaders Bess Brambrink said the Little Flames are participating with radio stations KDLM and KBOT in a holiday food drive. The group has placed collection boxes at five area locations: Frazee United Methodist Church, All In All, United Community Bank, and Bethlehem Church, all in Frazee, and the Wolf Lake Sampo. Anyone wishing to donate either canned or nonperishable foods should bring their items to one of the collection locations by Sunday. The food will be collected Monday for distribution from the Detroit Lakes Food Pantry.

John Jensen said he entered Saturday’s Minnesota Dark House & Angler’s Association Carver of the Year Contest out of curiosity, with no great expectations. He ended up winning the top two awards of the event. He won a trophy for carving the best working decoy of the event, and another for having carved the most collectible decoy at the contest.

While two people attended Monday’s Truth in Taxation hearing for the City of Frazee, all was quiet as no protests were made concerning the budget. Projected 1999 revenues are expected to be lower than 1998 estimates by about $34,500, but the increase in water and sewer revenues were not included in the figure. Those rate increases may account for about $70,000 more in revenues, Clerk/Treasurer Teri Osterman estimated.
