A Detroit Lakes man was killed when his car collided with a semi-truck near Detroit Lakes on Friday, Dec. 1.

According to the State Patrol, Timothy Lee Mitchell, 36, was driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata southbound on Highway 59 when he crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound 2024 Freightliner M2 tanker truck, driven by Michael Lynn Guhlke, 53, also of Detroit Lakes.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Airbags were deployed in the Sonata, but it was not reported if Mitchell was wearing a seat belt. 

Guhlke was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Highway 59 was shut down near the accident to allow access to a medical helicopter.

The crash was reported at 4:11 p.m. on dry pavement.

The Detroit Lakes Fire and Police departments, the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, St. Mary’s EMS, and Life Link III Medical Flights and Emergency Medical Services assisted the State Patrol on scene.
